Does anybody know where information on the actual breaking strenghts of different lines could be found? Thanks.

Berkeley has such info, but I don't know if they make it public. Also, the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, Wis., has tons of info on line test, as they test lengths of line every time a new application for line class record is made.

Of standard monofilaments, clear Stren used to be the closest to actual test of all the brands on the market. Their 10-pound test would break at less than .5 either way--up or down. For years Trilene was much stronger than listed. For example, their 10 lb test would go 11 or even 12 on test machines. This is a critical concern for someone going after a line class record.

Try the Hayward office and see what they will reveal -- altho I'm sure they will try not to make "product endorsement." Good luck in your search.

Try Tectan Supreme. This stuff is the thinest, and the strongest per diameter of any line I have ever encountered.

Thanks for the suggestions Cisco and Pardner.I'll keep digging and look into Tectan.

I once saw an investigative report on mattresses, and what the different companies did was deliberately create labels that made comparing different brands fairly nearly impossible. I guess confusing the public is a big part of marketting nowdays.

I wish mono and superlines had more detailed labels, like the nutitional info labels. Except the data would be on wet breaking strength, limpness, etc. .

Test them yourself as each batch may be differernt. Put a hook in the ceiling, take a piece of line you want tested and tie a ring on each end with a palomar knot, attach it to a bucket and and the ceiling, and add weights until it breaks. This is also a great knot testing and comparison method.
