I recently ran into a good smallmouth bite through the ice has anyone ever heard of people catching them in the winter, and actually going after them?

Actually, smallies are very susceptible under the ice. They concentrate in deep water pockets in river systems. The bad news is that they can be easily fished out of these concentrations. Excuse me for my bias on this issue. I am an absolute catch and release guy regarding bass. Be kind to them.
Be safe,

We are also strictly catch and release. The fish we caught were in 10' of water on a sand flat. The lake was crystal clear so we were sight fishing. Has anyone ever caught fish in numbers in the winter?

I Fish Okoboji in IA a lot in the winter and have really gotten into them in a few times. Usually it's either a bunch or none but no real pattern to them. I've gotten them walleye fishing mostly. I've seen big schools, 20-40 fish, whenever I have gotten into them. Definately release them however.
