Hey Fish-On, forgive my skepticism, but that can't be an actual photo of "earthlights," since in one photo we have northern and southern hemispheres, and eastern and western hemispheres. This has been seriously doctored, and I suspect dramatized for effect.
Yes, we're a world with two countries now over one billion in population, and we're growing -- but, do you really believe both North and South Dakota are so brilliantly lighted as they appear in the "photo"? Look at Alaska -- there are vast areas without electricity, but the "photo" shows bright lights scattered over vast portions of that giant, but sparsely populated state.
Some computer guy was having fun with this one. (Incidentally, can you imagine the entire globe without any cloud cover what-so-ever?)

Of course it's not a single photo! Hasta be sunlight somewhere, doesn't it?
Nonetheless, it's a neat rendition of our little village.

Read my entire post, will you? Where do you suppose one would have to be to photograph the entire world? What the motives are I do not know, but this is an outrageous representation -- the spatial relationship even mimics a Mercator projection. We'd get that from space?
Information, print or graphic, ought to educate -- not mislead.

All of those lights are just from boats, there was a special filter on the space shuttle and the in-fisherman needed to know just how many people night-fish.
Thatsoccool.

Lighten up and enjoy.....
Sorry you feel misled.
Nobody is trying to pass it off as reality, just a pretty picture. For what it's worth, it's now "wallpaper" on my PC, and several co-workers have commented on the "serenity" of it.

Theses are the real facts....
