I was fishing one early spring day on a small river near my home. Fishing was good, but slow. Lot's of time to enjoy nature and get a few rays. Felt real good to have the coat off and lay on my back watching a chipmunk feeding on berries in a tree above me.
The critter would run out to the farthermost branches and pick a berry or two and run back to a stronger branch to eat it in safety. On each trip he would bend the flimsy branch closer to the water an just above two rocks set out away from the river bank about 35 feet from shore.
Apparently the berry's had been falling of the tree into the river an onto the rocks, and the little critter noticed this.
As his pickings were getting thin on the long tiny branch he had been darting out upon, he become more and more interested in them rock berries.
As he hung from the end of the branch he could just about reach the berries, but not quite, so he finally jumped onto the rock. After his jump, his branch popped back up and the little bugger found himself stranded on the rock.
Fishing still being slow I found this drama interesting, what was this little bugger going to do now?
He sat there eating the last of the berries on the rock and paced from one side to the next, I could see in his little beady eye's he was weighing his options, he was forced to swim for it.
Without any notice he popped off the rock like a fat tick off a fast dog.
Splash, paddle---paddle--paddle--paddle--SPLOOSH--CHOMP--SPLOOOSSH!
WOOOO.... A huge pike chomped that little bugger 2 feet from shore, gone! Burp, end of story for that guy!
Poor bugger, but still, this was Very cool!
I was sitting there wondering what I could use to catch the beast when I hear a splashing near the rock the fuzzy bugger had been sitting on before he went for his last swim.
Then I saw the dangdest thing!
That monster pike was back, but this time he was placing berries on that rock, just were the others were, HUH?
Funny deal, EH?
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Good one! So now along with the frogs, I have to catch chipmunks for bait. Where will it all end? How about opening up an exotic bait shop? I have a couple stories involving the wife. I'll ponder and get back to it.

How about a pair of hamsters???? Or is the long fluffy tail a
necessary attractant?

Here's my 'hard one to believe' story:
My Brother-in-law and I had been tossing dead bait and small rock bass overboard to a seagull all morning long. After a while, the bird just stayed in the water instead of flying around. Then - SQUAAAK--KUR-SPLASH !!! We both turned around only to see several floating feathers in a splash wake. The gull
was gone.
We never caught or saw that fish, and you can bet we spent a lot
of time in that small bay.
AINT YOU SO SMART?

BE,I did say it was a good story. If it had not been for those two minor inconsistanties I would have bought it all maybe even the big pike baiting the rock.
An eagle was flying along one day and saw a small chipmonk sitting on a rock. He swooped down and swallowed the chipmunk in one gulp , then flew back up near the clouds. A little while later, the chipmunk stuck his head out of the eagles butt. He looked at the eagle and said "Hey buddy, how high are we flying?". The eagle said "Oh, about 1000 feet". The chipmunk then looked at him and said "GEE, YOU WOULDN'T SHI_ A GUY WOULD YA ?". ;-)

This is not a fishing story, but it is wildlife related (well kinda). One day my wife is driving down the freeway and notices a few vehicles ahead is a flatbed truck carrying some live chickens in crates. She also notices a fancy little red convertible with hot little blonde driving with her hair blowing in the wind like she's something special (note). My wife notices that a couple of chicken crates are separating from the bundle and are inching their way towards the end of the truck bed. Well, you guessed it, a couple crates end up falling off the truck and stop traffic. No chickens were hurt but everyone behind the truck got a good laugh at the driver chasing down his chickens and getting them back on the truck. While everyone is stopped, my wife notices the fancy blonde brushing her hair and starting to get a little agitated at the chicken truck for holding up her day. The chicken truck begins to move again and traffic soon follows. After everyone got up to highway speed, my wife notices a white blurr coming towards the windshield....splat. "Oh no, not a chicken" says the wife. She pulls over to the shoulder and begins to laugh hysterically. She notices the little red convertible has pulled over also. The hot little blonde gets out of her car and immediately walks over to my wife, who is still laughing uncontrollably, and says "can I have my wig back"? True story or not? You decide.

Were fishing east of Cleveland on Erie for Perch. Throwin back the small ones. A few go belly up and the gulls hang around to pick them off. My buddy who is "older" is kinda slow pulling the perch in over the side. Finally a gull is too impatient and grabs a perch and swallows it still hooked and tries to fly off. My buddy just about dirtys his pants and reels in the gull still attached to his rod and reel. He is determined to get his perch and rig back. I reach over and cut his line. I figure the gull in now gut hooked and I'm not dealing with that!
A couple yrs later were Perch jerkin Erie again and this time the Gulls are snatching dead minnows. Slow as ever a gull grabs my buddys fresh baited rig and beak hooks himself trying to steal minnows off the Perch rigs.
I haven't Perch fish with this Old Timer for a few yrs.

Great story, I can almost believe it. The lake where I cottage at has some huge pike in it and a lot of us have seen their handywork. I saw a Loon with its single young swimming in front of the camp 3 years ago. The adult Loon was very skitty in the way it was acting so I watched it for a while. A few seconds later there was a big splash and youngster was gone. The Loons crying and searching for the youngster made a lasting impression on me. It went on for hours. I always release big Pike, but every time I do I think about the Loon and the missing youngster.
