I'm looking for a hand held unit. What do you folks think about the Globalmap 100 compared to Garmin, Magellan? Thanks.
Steve
Good question. I am in the same boat. I am waiting on some info from Magellan on the 330 marine. But other than less memory (2 megs vs 8 megs) it looks like the GM100 is pretty hard to beat. There is so much software available, topo, streets navionics including fishing hot spots etc. The cost is better also. Is the 2 megs enough memory, maybe someone could help? I like the $179.99 price over the rest. I am waiting for price of 330M and also what maps will be available. Garmin has all the maps available but there prices seem high, they do have several new models coming that I haven't researched. I wish someone would hae given me one for x-mass so I wouldn't have to decide!

I'm bringing this up top again hoping for some help. Anyone?
this just came in from Magellan.
The 330M has all of the land detail of the Map 330.
More maps are expected for the unit. There is a topo CD expected to be available this summer. Other maps are expected to follow.
It is not possible to load MapSend Marine into the 330M.
The price for the 330M will be about $20 more than the Map 330.

i've owned one for almost a year now and i really like it. never had a problem. 2-meg of memory is plenty.i fish northeastern wisconsin, my download(off mapcreate cd) covers the bay denoc area(upper michigan) down to manitowoc over to new london and up as far as the eagle river area. if i ever fish out of this large area i can download what i want in a couple of minutes. i use it for fishing(all seasons) and biking(same cradle i use on the boat mounts on the handlebars)on the trails. would recommend this unit to anyone. you can download two separate areas too. the only drawback is its hard on batteries. 4"AA"'s last about 8-10 hrs. but in the car and boat it gets plugged in to the lighter. it is a very sturdy unit and it is waterproof(not all are)so it really fits my needs.not afraid to fish anywhere after dark now. let me know if you find anything better. i doubt you will.
Thanks Craig, That is exactly what I needed to hear. I fish and hunt the same areas as what you have loaded in your gps. That gives me a very clear picture how much two megs can hold. I can't find a better priced, waterproof unit with good maps available. One more question, do you know if Lake of the Woods maps are available, I make a pilgrimage there to Musky fish and hopefully soon to hunt.
Thanks again,
Rob

the only place i know of to get a lake of the woods map is through www.navonics.com. we fished out of witch bay camp, which is near kenora, ontario the past couple years. the detail already in the globalmap 100(world map)was good enough.just needed to find our way back to camp after dark. we didn't have the gps our first year and got lost in the day-time!! so many islands and everything looks the same after a while. so having the unit let me relax and just fish. another good thing about the globalmap 100 is its compatable with these other sofware makers. you can download contour maps which are now becoming available, but too expensive for me(thats what my wife tells me!). hope this helps.

that's the globalmap 100 by lowrance. you download all your detail maps off the map create cd. you can also download off your gps to your pc any information you have stored while out fishing, hunting etc. they have a pc program all set up for you to transfer to. you can get alot of info about the features at their website.www.lowrance.com. good luck, and let me know if you find something better for the money.
Thanks again Craig, I fish south of Kenora about 30 miles I would guess. I know what you mean, easy to get lost in the islands. Been there many times so I know my way around but not to far from the camp. Took a trip up to Astron Bay up the tug channel, started catching fish then left with a cupple hours to spare, just in case. I think I will order one soon. Looking for best price 179.99 looks pretty good for what you get.

My hand held lowrance worked good for two years then developed a leak and fogged up.
