Fished Mazurik Sat afternoon. Water was very clear off Marblehead gradually turning dirty (fishable)around the ferry/limestone docks. Marked few, caught two, one big. One in clear water, one in the dirty water. Only baitshop we found open was NAS/Custards near Dempsy. Heard Herbs on 53 was open. Everything was frozen around the Dempsy ramp. Mazurik had some chunk ice when we launched, it was all blown out at dark. No ice on lake.
Good Luck.

Nice job Jcarp. It is nice to see a post like this after a long and cold winter. I plan on fishing off of Marblehead next Saturday. We have always done well there this time of year. What did you catch those two eyes on and how slow was your presentation? Did you anchor? I have had better success anchored this time of year. The slower the better. Vibees with just enough speed to keep the bait vibrating. Please fill me in on all the details. See ya out there. Hey Brian, get in touch with me.

It was calm enough we could keep our lines vertical by facing the bow into the wind and using the electric. Beats handling a cold, wet anchor rope, though I'll anchor is necessary. I use a flasher off the back of the boat - just like ice fishing. Use a piece of old car trim & a C-clamp to attach the transducer to the boat or with the newer self leveling transducers, just attach the cord to a tomato stake and stick it out to the side in a rod holder. Pimples and jigging raps. Chrome pimple w/green prism tape was the only lure used Sat.- didn't mark enough fish to experiment.
When the waves are up around 3-4 ft, we sometimes drift fish with 2 oz bouncers and harnesses. Big shiner on # 2 front hook, smaller one on # 4 back, char. float w/chrome blade is my favorite.

Jcarp,
Will a disco ball work? Just kidding. I've never tried a flasher before. So you just need a flashy piece of metal on a string suspended right off the bottom? I'll give it a try. Thanks for the info.

I think that he means a flasher type sonar, but I could be mistaken...

What is a good weight for Rapala or Jigging Spoon?
A good weight pimple or rapala depends on the fish and the current (you have to feel the jig working and know where it is) but I normally use a 2/3rd to 3/4 oz.sized jigs....
Also you might try a plain pink or chartruese 3/8th oz jighead (no plastic tail) with a big 3" minnow tail hooked .Just fish it by slowly lifting and letting it fall along the bottom.Try to keep the rig three to six inches off the bottom and stay ready bites can be real light....Tight lines.~~Lets break that state walleye record again this spring guys!.......Len

Yes, I was referring to a flasher type sonar. Graphs will work. I agree with Len's comments on lure size and presentation except I pull my lure above any high mark and probably catch well over half my fish 5 to 10 feet off bottom. High fish are almost always active and frequently big.
We always start with the largest size jigging raps and pimples and go down 1 size if we work a lot of fish that don't bite. 5 little shiners on the raps and 3 on pimples (replace 1 little shiner with a big one if avail). If we don't catch fish in 15-20 minutes, we move. We stay clear or at least well outside any groups.

Goose,
I'm thinking about heading out this weekend but I think I will stay in the Marblehead area. Untill the water warms up I think this is the area to be. Let me know how you do and I'll do the same.
