I will be buying a new finder this month, proabably a Lowrance X-75 or X-85.
Is the extra power of the X-85 worth the extra money, or is it wasted in shallower water?
Would the X-75 be perfectly adequate for fishing water mostly less than 50ft deep?

I have the X-75 because I thought the extra power would wasted since I normally fish in 20 feet or less. I have not begun to use its full potential, so I am probably not a good resource. I need to take some time to just play with it.

Good luck with your decision.

If you will primarly be fishing in water less than 50 ft, i think the X-85 is just starting to show its better effects at that level.
Another question i should ask is are you going to be night fishing at all? Cabela's has a Lowrance LCG-2400 which includes speed and temp transducer. It is pretty much a X-75 but without the cold cathode lighting. It still has lighting from the sides, but will save you over $50 (its $350) if your looking to get the speed and temp transducer. I baught one of these units about a month ago and Im still in the process of instaling it so i dont know how it works yet.
Have fun looking, it took me all winter to decide what to get. MarbleEye's

Looking at the specs of the 2400 pretty much says that it is identical to the Eagle Optima.

Since Lowrance has dropped the Eagle line, and the Optima was a great unit -- I think they put it in a Lowrance stampted case -- put in the X-75 black and gray display (compared to the shadeds of blue display for the Opptima) and packaged it with speed and temp.

I have had my Optima for the last couple of years and find it to be totally trouble free, and finds fish for me in all depths of water.

I expect that you will be very pleased with your purchase.

Take care

You probably heard the old saying "dam I wish I had bought the ----" I have the x85 and one thing you must consider is that your fish will change at some point where the extra power is worth the investment. I fish all kinds of water river lake ect depth from shallow to 300ft deep and ther is a real difference in power.I can see t he fish tight to the bottom, with my 75 on the bow I can't see the humpslike the 85 so power does make the difference in some cases I believe that if you have it you when you need it its there.
