I'm thinking about fishing my first tournment. I've chosen to fish this weekend in the WWA's Red Wing Tourney. I've heard that maybe they don't have a permit to hold the tourney. Is this true? Wouldn't that just be my luck! Let me know as I have not paid my fees yet. Thanks!!!

I suggest that if you're interested in your doing your first tournament, start with a known quantity. The MWC puts on fine, well run tournaments and has been for 16 years. You won't have much to worry about except catching fish. Seems to me that should be your biggest and only problem in tournament fishing.
There are still a few spaces left in Ortonville 5/20 - 21(Big Stone is a great walleye fishery) and Lake City 9/23-24.

I myself checked into the MWC....after I said I only had a 16 ft. boat with a 40 hp I was pretty much told that's not good enough.Needless to say I'll never fish a MWC when I get the "proper rig"!

Mike Gofron won an MWC tournament in a 16ft Lund with a small motor. Whoever told you that was not representing the MWC correctly. You should reconsider... It is a wonderful experience and you meet wonderful people. It is a crash course on fishing for sure!!
I'm surprised that somebody at MWC told you this. I've fished numerous MWC tournaments and when I first started I ran a 16' boat with a small engine. I was looking at a picture the other day of Mike Gofron and Dan Machnik when they won the MWC Illinois River tournament. These two were fishing out of a duck boat that carried no resemblance to a sea worthy craft!

I don't know who told you that you can't fish the MWC with a 16 ft. boat. I am fishing the circuit in a 1660 Lund Pro V,w/60 tiller. I think you will find that many people that fish tourneys, fish them in 16 ft. boats

Ok, so this guy owns a boat that is somewhere between a 16 foot duck boat and a Lund 2025 and he understands that the MWC has lots to offer. But know one has answered his question. He would still like to know if the WWA is qualified to run this week's tournament. Has the DNR approved it? I have sent in my money and am planning on participating in the tournament. It is a 175 mile trip for me (one way) and I am now concerned. I hadn't heard anything about this sitaution until now. Does anyone know the situation? Or is this a hoax?

There are no boat requirements for the MWC. spring Valley had a wide range of boats and engines. The smallest was about 14 ft with a 15 hp engine.
Sorry, can't help you with any info on the other tourny.

I just spoke to the DNR office in St. Paul. They have issued a permit for that tourney this weekend. Question answered.

Hey Gang,
I am curious who the boat informatin came from. The rules clearly state how big your boat has to be and how it must be equipped.
Ans as for what TBO was saying, you gotta watch those guys in the 16 foot boats. If you are not carefull, they may beat you, every time!!!LOL.
Good luck.....R

I have never heard of a boat that catches fish. The boat doesn't make the fisherman. I know guys that have 19 foot, $35,000. boats, with all the fancy stuff in the world, and still couldn't catch a cold, let alone a fish.
There is only one thing that you need, "the want to", if you want it bad enough, a 12 foot Sears v-bottom with a Ted Williams 3hp will be good enough.
If you want to fish, go for it, I did.

Who told you that your boat would not work in the MWC tournaments? At the first event two weeks ago in Spring Valley Il. I saw lots of boats smaller than yours..there are some big waters that are fished but also rivers .
I am not sure who told you this, but it is incorrect. We indeed have permits for both tournaments this weekend. We look forward to providing you with your first tournament experience. Look me up at the rules meeting or at the weigh-in's. I would like to welcome you personally. See you at the rules meeting Friday night.
