What does one look for in a bottom bouncing rod? Length? Medium, medium heavy? Speed?

Just curious of the different opinions.

My current bottom bouncer rods are St. Croix Avid casting rods. The actual model is the 6'8" MXF (medium, extra fast). I have installed Shimano Calyx reels with 10# Silver Thread mono for backing, and 6/14 Fireline for the mainline. By the way, these Shimano reels have a $20 rebate on them so that makes them a pretty good deal. Not sponsored by any of these companies, just use them because they work for me.

i have used an unusual rod on erie which at times out-produced all of our regurlar rigs....a 12 ft noodle rod....it hits bottom and digs in and builds up tension and then bounces up much higher than our 6'6" rods...evidently this action is the ticket when these rods are working well...steve

I like the new Fenwick HMG AV. 7 ft Medium. This rod has a nice gentle taper. Not too fast ans not too slow. Combine that with its strength and sensitivity and you have a winner. The new guides are awesome too.

Depends on the size of bouncer I'm using. 6.5ft med with 1.5 oz or less. 7 ft med hvy with 2 oz or greater. Both are built on St. Croix premier blanks. I can feel the bottom composition & structure real well.

My personal preference is a relatively stiff 6' graphite rod. Since I do almost all my fishing on Lake Erie, I'll cast with one rod, and "drag" one which has the bottom bouncer/worm harness combo. The Bottom Bouncer rod is spooled with fireline, Since this line is no stretch. The stiff rod, combined with the fireline, and boat movement, results in the fish being hooked while still being in the rod holder most of the time. I also prefere the Fenwick line of rods. They served me very well. I hope this helped

There are a lot of opinions on this subject. Check for info. and articles on the pro page. Mike McLellands ideas work well for a hand held rod. There are also many previous postings on this subject, that are full of good ideas.
