I was checking out prices for replacement trebles for some of my crankbaits. I was wondering how many fisherman actually remove the original trebles from cranks out of the box and replace them with others, such as Mustad Triple Grip or Partridge VMC's? Have you found that your hooking and holding percentage had sone up? Or do you, like me, simply sharpen the hooks right before the crank hits the water? I've found by doing this before I put each bait in the water I hook and hold more fish.

I remove the hooks right out of the box and replace them with Triple grips. After losing many fish after the hook up several years, it was recommend by someone on this board to switch to triple grips. Boy, I could tell the difference right away. My hook up to in the boat ratio went up, and I have never looked back!

Out in Oregon land where the walleyes grow bigger and nobody fishes for them :-)

I replace mine with the excaulibers, they seem like the best ones that i have tried. But the main thing is to keep those hooks sharp!!. If your like me, i like to hit bottom alot, and i sharpening them several times a day! good luck cranking!!!!!!!

I do not do alot of crankbait fishing, but enough.
I do not change all my crankbaits, but only those that come with standard company trebbles. Bombers and special edition baits with Excalibur or such hooks I leave alone.

When I do change my crankbaits hooks, I use the EWG Gamakatzu hooks. They seem to have a higher hooking percentage on smaller fish as well as big with the curved design of the hook.

I would say do what you are confident in though.

Like a previous post stated, some lure come with decent hooks, like reef runners. I replace the others with gamakatzu hooks. Pricey to do with lots of cranks, but they start sharp and seem to stay sharp longer. Some hooks, like some knives, seem to be made with lower grade metal.

What size triple grip do you use on which lures? I've heard of other people doing this and I'd like to give it a try this year.

Basically the deep diving cranks(15+ ft. or deeper) take a #2 hook. #4 hooks for medium depths and #6's for shallow running cranks. I have Triple Grips in sizes 2-6 handy to match them up with the original hooks if I'm in doubt.
