I am planning a boat trip from Lake Erie, up the Detroit River, to the Canadian waters of Lake St. Clair. I know I need to check in with Canadian Customs but I don't know the best place place to do so. Any advice would be appreciated.

I hope I'm not doing anything wrong, but we fish the Canadian waters of the Detroit River and St. Clair A LOT, and I've never checked in anywhere. Seems to me that so long as you don't actually go aground in Canada, there's no need to go through customs. I too would appreciate any further input.

as far as i know (which isn't much) as long as you don't anchor in canadian water or tie up at a dock,or touch ground yourself. you don't have to check in.
make sure you watch the channel depth, and depending on which side of belle isle you run on, you'll have to watch out for the rock/sand bar just north of the belle isle bridge. that's on the american side and there are 2 red channel markers marking the upper and lower end of the bar.

i was tied up to the dock on canadian side perch fishing about 10 years ago and the mounties or border patrol what ever the right name for the canadian dnr is checked me and said if you tie up or go ashore you have to call in to customs and get a release number hope this helps you
