Hello, it’s Friday evening. We had some good fishing the last few days at lake Erie. One example is, yesterday afternoon Gary Livingston and his friend came in with 6 walleyes they caught north of Kelleys Island. They were all big fish. I have the picture here in front of me and the fish look like they are all 6, 7, & 8 pounders. He said they were drifting using night crawler harnesses with a snap weight ahead of it. The harnesses were ones he had made with our components. He usually uses a size 3 blade and small 3mm dia. beads, with a 36" leader. He said they missed some too. Also Bill and his son Jeff Becker caught some huge walleyes up their too. They were trolling using a black and silver deep #10 Husky Jerk Rapala, a deep Smithwick black and silver with a orange belly, and the Fried Chicken, and Monkey Puke Reef Runner. They said they were also using a Clown colored Husky Jerk that the smallmouth bass kept hitting. The biggest walleye out of the eight they caught was 12 ½ lb. They kept the largest bass and it was 21 ½" and over 6 lbs. After we weighed the bass they took it back and released it in the lake. This is a perfect time to get some of those big fish. The big ones are done spawning and they have rested for a week or so and they are hungry. Also saw a bucket of huge perch. Three people had their 90 perch they caught fishing off the shore yesterday and they had one fish over 15". This week end the weather looks good. Highs in the 70’s, low winds out of the south and southwest, a little rain and some sunshine. The trip I took this week to Canada was very informative, encouraging, and worthwhile. The Lake Erie Consortium recommended that all of the limits be lowered this year to try to build up the walleye and perch population in the future. We wanted to go over to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources meeting announcing the limit changes for the Canadian commercial fishing fleet for the next 3 years. We were very impressed, and encouraged. The amount of walleyes and perch they are aloud to catch were cut approximately in half. And only 6% of their allowable catch can be caught before May, during the spawn, reduced from 50%. I’ll talk more about this later or you can come in the store and I will explain it better. If you have questions you can e-mail me too. Now all we can hope for is some good calm weather during the spawn so the fry can live so we can have a record hatch and get these fish back in the lake. Good fishing, and good luck. Don.
