I recently purchased a Global Map 2000 and was wondering if most of the people that have them use the SmartMap cartridges with the Map Link to enhance the image of the lake? Do you recommend it? Are there any other useful bits of information on using this unit? Thank you very much in advance.

howdy Andy,
I have had mine for 5 years now. I have the old 5 channel. I do use the IMS Smart Maps. If you don't you won't get a detailed close map. I believe the closest you can see without the cartridge is from 1500 feet up. Look on E-Bay for deals on the Cartridges. I was able to get them for $15. You should be able to find them somewhere.
There are newer units now & they are 12 channel but I have no need to change that , or do I see myself selling this one. The GM-2000 is an outstanding unit. It just doesn't have the new CD-Rom Mapcreate.
If you need the Map reader, they can also be found at good prices.

Andy you may want to check out c-maps cartridges. I don't know where you will be using your unit. I use mine on Lake Erie and the C-map cartridge for the western end of Lake Erie realy brings details in close. Check out www.C-MAP.com this will help you out alot.
If you need a map reader I have I can sell you.

The C-maps have much more detail than the smart maps,West Marine has them or you can order them direct from Navionics I think.Good Luck..Bob
