So many questions. These all come up individually now and again, so read this board for a few months and you'll get some great input. Also, search the archives. I'll give some basics since nobody has responded yet...

>WHEN TO USE IT?
It's another way to get depth. I use it for suspeneded fish, sometimes in stead of my downriggers, sometimes in addition to.

>HOW TO USE IT?
Some fill their spool and troll it behind the boat, others splice a 3-color section into their mono, add a 50' leader, and pull it behind planer boards.

>WHY YOU WOULD USE IT?
Follows contours well, depth is predictable. Works down to about 30'

>EQUIPMENT,TERMINAL TACKLE,KNOTS. ETC.
Long, limber, inexpensive glass rod, large capacity trolling reel, buy the 17lb test as it has the same lead core as the heavier leadcore line.

> What are its disadvantages?
Depth attained is speed dependent. Many prefer sticking with their regular trolling rigs and using snapweights or even downriggers.

On Lk Michigan, the salmon charter boats run it a lot. Often they run up to two full spools of the 18# core out to get a lot deeper than 30' -- can often bump 70-80' bottoms with 100+ yards (yes yards) of line out. They get real upset when other boats get within about a half mile of them ;-).

Main reason they run it: It catches fish!

Why does it work? I have heard two theories: 1) I gets the bait a long way away from the boat to catch spooky fish -- especially big chinook in late summer. 2) The lead core gives the lure a different action -- big spoons, dodgers w/ flies or squids, or J-plugs all work.

I have only fought one king on this kind of equipment and the other thing I can report is that it is fun -- if you don't mind fighting a 30# salmon on no stretch line 300' out. My kind of fun! You feel every head shake and tail thump.

I agree about the fish catching part. This past year was the first time I used leadcore on a regular basis. I purchased two leadcore rigs two years ago and didn't run them because I was catchng fish without them. I had a lull one afternoon so I put them out and they worked! It has been very effective for me. I ran fullcores off of Mr. Walleye planner boards and caught fish. I've used it for both Salmon and Walleye. I will try the 3 color idea this summer. Thank you for the tips.
