I am considering buying a Maxxum transom
mount 74 pound thrust motor for my 17 foot aluminium. Total weight of boat motor and
"stuff" is probably around 1800 pounds.
Would this motor be sufficient for forward
trolling crankbaits and backtrolling livebait rigs. Boat is a console model with 90 hp. All opinions appreciated.

That should be 65 pound thrust not 74.

Right! It is a 74 lb thrust 24 volt motor as I have one sitting on the stern of my 1775 Pro V in the garage that I bought this summer. While Cabela's and Bass Pro don't list them, there are available elsewhere at your local Marine MinnKota Dealer. Don't know about trolling crank baits forward, but does one ##### of a job back trolling in any thing mother nature through at it this summer on Lake Miltonia. While they make a 65 lb backtrolling model all you have to do is turn the control head 180 degrees by removing one bolt which takes about 2 minutes.

I have Maxxum 74 bow mount on my Tuffy 1760. Had one on my last boat too. Great motor, has handled anything I have ever needed it to do. Have never trolled cranks with it tho. Plenty of thrust and fairly easy on the batteries (don't remember what the exact amp draw is).

I ran a Maxxum 74 on an 18' aluminum boat - 90hp combo and it worked well. Also "stealth trolled" stickbaits at night with it and it worked fine.

I now run another Maxxum 74 on a Triton 205 (heavier boat) and I like it there just as much. I agree with the previous post running on a Tuffy - it'll push through a bunch. I usually use the kicker to troll, but on occasion, have used the MinnKota on the bow to pull #18 Rapalas at night - still worked well.

I've been pleased with the performance on the boats I've run.

I run a 65PD/AP on my 1800 Pro V/120HP. I trooll 85% of the time with it and love it. Works great from .5 to 1.5 mph. Will pull at 2 mph but wears the batteries out too fast. I get about 6 hours per charge. (2 batteries) The auto pilot feature has spoiled me. Just as easy to fight and net a fish as when a have a partner along. One word of caution, with auto pilot on a slow day, make sure you stay awake!

I have the 74 tiller on a 195 T-Pro Tiller and it does great so on a bowmount it should work even better just make sure you get the longer shaft. I use the 74 when rigging or jigs and want the slow speed or hold over a rock pile. I have a 100 4 stoke yamaha that I use to back troll when dragging cranks @ 2+ mph.
