I've fished the Maumee for many years, it was and still is a ##### of a good fishery. But lately I'ts just to crouded to fish it correctly. My advice to you would be to bring a boat and hit the lake.

The Maumee is a great fisherey. Depending on water temp, the spawn usually takes place sometime in early April. I've found the best times to LEGALLY catch fish are pre-spawn (March) and post spawn (May). It has been my experience that during the spawn it is very difficult to catch fish legally. There is a ton of snagging that goes on during that time and I prefer to stay away when the snaggers are doing their thing. I fish a carolina rigged floating jig with twister tail. Fewer snags than with lead head jigs, and seems to result in more legal fish.

The Maumee is a good fishery and you can catch a lot of eyes there without snaggin them. It gets very crowded and sometimes it is a lot easier to fish out of a boat. But, the crowding may lessen this year since Ohio has cut the limit from 10 eyes to 4 during March and April. Watch this board and you will get regular reports on the action on the Maumee and Lake Erie.

Bob-Oh....I would agree that at times it is possible to catch decent numbers of fish legally, but you can't deny that when the spawn is in full swing the majority of fish taken from the river are snagged. I have seen it time and time again. I would be willing to bet that 90-95% of the female walleye that are taken are illegal fish, and they come out of there in huge numbers when the spawn is on. There are plenty of days when we "honest" fisherman have 1 or 2 small jacks to show for a days fishing, while the snaggers are taking out stringers so heavy they can barely carry them. I would like to see Ohio stop this altogether, but it is a big money maker for them, both in licenses and fines. With the walleye numbers in the big lake going down dramatically, I'm sure stopping this type of fishing would help reverse that trend.

Ric .. I grew up 3 miles South of Grand Rapids on a farm & went to school in McClure,Oh. It's rare to find the right flow, temp & clarity, when the run is on .. 95% on the Mee & Sandusky have been snagged since I was a kid. Dad always had a boat on Erie & we would be up there on weekends in April actually catchin' Eyes off Crane Creek to the Reefs. I hate to think how many nice Eyes get ripped & die of fungus from the snaggers. If the conditions were right, we did go down to Weirs Rapids & fish the North-side riffle .. Had some great catches, but for the most part the River/Mee doesn't allow much catchin' in March/Early April.

Raybob .. 56 yro & it's still goin' on!
