I am from Wisconsin, but wanted to try fishing Lake Oahe this summer. I will be taking my 60ish year old parents. Was wondering what the best time of year is. Lake is huge, better to base out of Pierre or Mobridge? Would also appreciate any reccomendations on waterfront resorts.

Mobridge is a great area, but since you are taking your parents, there is no question that I would base out of the Pierre area. If you are faced with mulitple days of rain and wind, Pierre has much more to offer when stuck on land.

Ditto -- at Pierre you can also fish below the dam. However, while you are there, be sure to spend a good portion of a day at the Heritage Center. It's a remarkable museum and structure -- built into the side of a coulee, reminiscent of Native American earth homes of the Missouri River Valley (Mandan, Hidatsu).

Mobridge is a neat site, also. Grand River drains there, good smaller museum in Mobridge, casino across the river (decent food) a Sakakawea memorial site and the grave site of Sitting Bull (he was born nearby, also). Even with good winds, there are protected areas to fish in the Mobridge area -- you can launch at several sites on both sides of the river (last bridge until Bismarck is at Mobridge). Have a great trip.

I am not "waterfront"....as the crow flies I am about three miles from the shores of Oahe! I am south east of Mobridge about twenty miles........if you are looking for a quiet place, with good home cooked food, and a comfy atmosphere, maybe a nice walk in the evening after dinner, or in the morning befor breakfast, I have that.....

TP180, It would depend on what time of the summer you'll be at Oahe. Traditionally the Mobridge area is "unbelievable" in May and June, then the fish seem to move south. June and July Whitlocks can be hot. The fishing seemed consistant in the Pierre area most of last year. My personal preferences are Swan Creek in the early summer, May,June, Then the Little Bend area later in the year. July,August. I would like to remind you that there is a Oahe only license available for $20.00 for nonresidents and residents. Not much good to residents but a real plus for nonresidents. The limit on Oahe is 14 fish per day with a possesion limit of 42 fish per lincense. These are all sklot fish so read the reg's before fishing. Oahe was slow for fishing pressure last year and they say there are to many fish, So come on over and thin them out. I would reccomend that you fish during the weekdays the weekends could be very busy.

I like the mobridge area better myself. Always have a good time up there.

It all depends on timing and other forms of entertaiment you are looking for. if you want to do more then fish hit pierre.

"Remember" annual Oahe license $20 and annual family Oahe only $59, but fishing below dam at Pierre puts you on Lake Sharpe (will cost you) big time if you have Oahe only

My fiance and I fished Oahe this summer. We were above the dam and stayed at an excellent resort. We were very pleased with their service and mentality. I highly reccomend it to anyone!!! We has such a good time. Defiantly worth it. I will be more than happy to give you the info!

Prairie Pillow -- Do you permit dogs? Specifically, a tiring old English pointer. I've reached the point where I don't like to kennel her anymore -- would prefer to take her along.

WOW, I appreciate all of the responses. My father enjoys native american history, so it looks like South Dakota in general will be a hit.

Walleye-Chick, yes I would appreciate any specific recommendations.
