View Full Version : Walleyes at Lorain
I was planning a trip to the Lorain area this weekend. I was wondering how the walleye fishing is and if anyone can tell me where a good place to start (Lorain, Vermillion, etc.) Thanks for your help. Also, does anyone happen to have Den's website address and telephone number?
Thanks a bunch!!!!

Call Denny at the Sportsmans Outpost 888-855-9032.
Last I heard the eyes were between Vermillion and Huron. Been tough for a couple days. Starting to get a few Steelies though.
Good Luck,
Steve

Steve,
What are some standard Dipsy set-ups (depth) for Steelies? And speed? I know you have to troll faster than for eyes, but I haven't fished for steelies before. How about spoon colors? Thanks in advance
Mike,
Speed is basically as fast as you can stand, and the faster the better. Most get up to around 3 mph bacause at 3 you can still expect a few eyes. Colors...oranges and blues are important and lavender doesn't hurt either. You need to tighten down the trip tention screw on the Dipsys to hold at the faster speeds and don't forget to back off the drags. Typical set ups are fairly shallow, but there is usually a prefered depth. If you've got down riggers they seem to attract the bullets. I would forgo the #4 settings because the of faster speeds. Our line snubber leaders and all are the same as for walleyes. Actually I should say that we use Steelhead set-ups for the walleyes (25# test flourocarbon leaders). Hope this helps, good luck.
Brother Rich get 15 Stellies out of Lorain today. It has started!!

I assume this is Jim. I figured yesterday was the magic day. I know 1 guy that got 5 Friday AM at 40 and 00. Can you give me any Lorain numbers for steelies? Budman
Nope I can't, but head out of Lorain NNW and you'll be able to find you own fish. Usually 10 - 12 miles is a good starting point.
Where is the closest ramp to get a boat to those silver bullets??...Also are many guys hunting/targeting them yet?..THANKS Guys!
The steelies are being taken on both sides of the sandbar right now. the south end has been the areas to fish the last couple of days, but as it goes on it will be moving a little each day. good luck and good fishin.

Mike,
ETT covered it. Blues, Oranges, Cromes, HotPink. The steelies will come up for your spoons. I like Pro-King spoons for steelies. Blue Orange Chrome ladderback ProKing has always been my #1 steelie spoon. I call it Denver Bronco. Also like the dolphin spoons by Dream Weaver for steelies and salmon fishing on Lake Ontario. Most consistent for us last year was big dipsey #1 setting back 35 feet but this will vary. Speed around 3 - 3.2.
Good Luck,
Steve

Where are "the sandbar" and "the south end"? When you talk about the fish moving, is it a general migration or is it just that one area will be hot one day and another area hot the next day?

Thanks for the info Steve and ETT. Steve, I still like the Pro Kings for walleyes, so I'll try them for steelies. I can't bear to call any lure color "Denver Bronco," however, since I am a 26 year season ticket holder of the Cleveland Browns. Denver denied the Browns too many times, so I may not use that color out of principle. LOL.

Come on HawkEye, didn't you ever want to throw John Elway in and drag him around behind your boat. Sounds like a good idea to Me!;-)

PS: Sometimes the walleye fishing is great in Lake Erie and other times it isn't worth "THE DRIVE".:-(

Walliar,
Yes, if I pretend I am dragging John Elway behind the boat I might be able to use the "Denver Bronco" color. The way the Browns rushed Elway during "The Drive", however, the lure probably wouldn't get hit in the water all day long.

Mike,
Suit yourself if you use it or call it Denver Bronco but it WILL catch Steelies and some walleye. Pro King Black, Purple, Chrome same pattern as the Denver Bronco has always been a good walleye spoon for us too. Another good Pro King is Blue and Iridescent. I think they call it crushed ice.
By the way - I was in the DAWG POUND for The Drive. Also there the week before for the Jets double overtime thriller...
Come on Weekend!

Hawkeye - or maybe you will be netting them in just under 2 minutes. lol
Ya'know, every year there are big debates on WC over what has happened to our "Fish Factory" in recent years. Maybe he (JE) cursed it on that cold January day in 1987. If you think back, that's about the time it all turned off. Maybe we should all drag that "Denver Bronco" tackle around. Me, I'm going to take a marker and put a big'Ol #7 on mine. Personally, I hope it snags and remains on the bottom of the lake for eternity! After that I'm going all out and using black/gold tackle for those "Steelies". Maybe together we can break this curse. Good Fishing! <*)))><

Steve,
We have season tickets in the upper deck now, but back in 1985-1990, we were in the Dawg Pound too. I was sitting in row six with my dad, as Elway went 98 yards against Marty's prevent defense. A pretty sad day. When Brian Brennan caught Kosar's touchdown pass with 5 minutes or so left, we all thought the Browns were headed to Pasadena and the Super Bowl. Those were great years to be a Browns' fan, despite the three championship game losses to Denver.....and yes, I will use your suggested "Denver Bronco" color Pro King for steelies. I have some in the tackle box.
