Hands down, the best flatline trolling crankbait for smallmouth and wallleye (if you want one lure that catches both species) is the Bill Dance series Excalibur fat free shad and fingerling. I've been flatline trolling for smallmouth and walleye religiously for 4 years and this lure is the ticket on Lake Erie!!!! If you're targetting walleye only, I'd use a Reef runner. Controlled depth trolling takes time and patience to master but it's worth it in the long run. I'm a light tackle fisherman so flatlining is the only way to go for me. Everything depends on controlling depth and understanding bottom contour (bottom contour more so for smallmouth than walleye) when trolling. You need to know PRECISELY what depth your crankbait is trolling at. This will depend primarily on the diameter of your line and the speed at which you troll at. You When flatline trolling, especially for walleye, you need to do a ton of zig-zagging and turning to get strikes. I'm convinced that the motor and boat spook walleye so by turning, you get the motor out of the path of the fish trailing your bait. Smallmouth don't spook quite as easily as walleye. If you're fishing in water that is deeper than 35 ft, try using lead core line to get your crank down deep. I hope that this info was helpfull. Try it and let me know how you do. It's worked for me!!!

Perch colored Shad Rap, #7 or next size smaller, is my favorite for combination of both species. Walleyes only: Reef Runner- Monkey Puke color. Small mouth only: Luhr-Jensen crawfish crank. Good luck.
