We are heading up to the U.P. Mich. area for a family vac. Any info on Little Bay De Noc, or other good lakes to fish would be greatly appreciated. Taking along a 16 ft. shallow Crestliner boat. We are doing some sight seeing, but would like to get in a little fishing time and be productive! Any tips or starting points greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Call the fisheries biologist at the DNR in Escanaba. The number is in your fishing guide. Bay De Noc walleyes like spinner rigs baited with nightcrawlers. Also partial to Phelps floaters with crawlers. Some trolling is effective but the spinners, bottom bouncers will catch you lots of fish. The area biologist will be able to point you to other waters, depending on your preference. Good luck and have fun.

Bay de Noc will make a wonderful vacation. There are plenty of nice 18 hole courses in the Gladstone/Escanaba area, a nice beach for the kids at Gladstone. Going sightseeing to Pictured Rocks
(1 hr away), Taquemonen (sp) Falls (2 1/2 hrs), Big Springs(45 min), Seney Wildlife Refuge (1 1/2-2 hrs) and going to see the various other waterfalls, etc makes it a wonderful location. You can also arrange for a whitewater raft trip (1 hr away) through Kosir's Rafting Service in Athelstene, WI.

Fishing for walleyes on the bay probably will be tough due to alewifes. But there is good pike and bass to be had. The inland lakes have good fishing and typically are not crowded. A 16 footer would be ideal to get into many of the inland lakes.

If you are looking to contact someone who has good knowledge of the area, stop in at Bayshore Tackle (Fishing Central in LBDN)
and as Naomi for Barnie Bratonia's number. His rates are very reasonable and being born and raised in the area, knows the fishing scene well.

Have fun.

You're running into one of the toughest times to fish up there. My advice would be to get a map of the bay and talk to the locals. Fish the reefs with jigs and crawler harness'. The rapid river end of the bay holds some pan fish if you can find them. Good luck

Thanks for the infor! I do have a Hot Spots map of the lake, from a co-worker who lived in Gladstone. Also heard the Mayflies were hatching and the bite is slow right now for Eyes.
