Dead lake got it's name from an indian war. There were two different bands living at opposite sides of the lake, many of the the dead Indians wound up in the lake. Thats a very short version of the story my grandpa told me years ago when I asked the same question.
As far as summer Walleye go there scattered try slip sinker rigs between Bones Island and the point between the East and West lake basins. There is a large arrow on the point. There is also a trough west of the 65foot drop in the west basin. Wath out for the sunken island. If you can't find the Walley this is one of the best sunfish lakes in the state. Go to the bowling ally's east of Indian bay and west of the point with the arrow.

Yes my spelling is bad. Dead lake by the way is in North west Minnesota, in Ottertail county, next to ottertail it is the second largest lake in the county at around 7000 acres, Ottertail is the premier walley lake there. Dead lake also has excellent bass fishing. When we were kids we netted two that were around 8 pounds as they fell over the ##### in indian bay after a storm. both were released of course.
