View Full Version : Mille Lacs
Hey Guys, I'm heading for Mille Lacs Wed.AM and was just wondering if anyone knows of any flats that are holding some active walleyes. Thanks for any reports; I'll post a report when we get back.

Was upto Mille Lacs Sunday,7/22,what a day.Although we didn't catch the mother load we ende up with about 16 fish between 17 and 301/2 inches. The best pattern was longlining crankbaits in 35 feet of water for suspended fish.We also slipbobbered on some larger concentrations, crawlers worked the best.Try any of the flats out in the middle as there boats on all of them.
What were you using for cranks? Type, size, color, ETC....and what was your line test and distance out behind the boat that worked best? Will be heading there soon and would love to try the trolling gig. Thanks!

We trolled mainly shadraps and taildancers-which worked the best-bluechrome or crawdad pattern, approximately 200 feet of line behind a planer board. The water is very clear and it was fairly calm so the boards were a big plus.

I went to Mille Lacs last Saturday. We fished the same mud we have been on all summer. NOTHING!! We couldn't keep them out of the boat two weeks ago, but I only had one bite all day/night on Sat.. What gives!! I'm not too familiar with the lake, this is the first year I've really hit it hard. Any advice on patterns or anything would be very helpful. Thanks
Here is a interesting tid-pit. I was talking with a guy that was muskie fishing on Mille Lacs this last weekend and his wife caught a 29" eye in 4' of water. He also stated that at wone island he was fishing around in about 4' of water he would see from time to time a school of about 30 eyes come thru. He tried stay with them, but couldn't get them to bite. I just thought this was interesting considering the surface temp is in the mid 70's. I know I haven't fish that shallow in 2 months.

Last year or the year before I guy I know did really well in a tournament around labor day fishing in less than 4 feet of water. The weather was very warm, maybe not as warm has it has been lately. Maybe this is a pattern that needs to be explored more. I've always heard muskie fisherman catch a lot of big walleyes in shallow water at all times of the year. Interesting topic.

Eyecrosser, The number #1 rule in walleye fishing is that there are no rules. I follow one rule, that being the 15 minute rule. When on a spot and without success the first 15 minutes, I either change spots or change presentations.
Just two weeks ago I was nailing the walleye in 38' of water off the flats and then last week I heardd several people catching them in 5' of water on the rocks during the heat of mid-day. Go figure. I just assume that somewhere some walleyes are going to bite and it's my job to find them. Some days are sure more challenging then others. A strong word of advice on mille Lacs. Follow the launch boats for starters.

Was out yesterday(7/24)I have never marked so many fish in my life! Unfortunately I could'nt get them to go,only managed to boat four fish. Was working central lake mud flats,Tried every thing. The fish were all on the top break and appeared to be active.A very slow presentation was how I caught the four, nothing on spinners.I caught over twenty fish in the same places last sunday mostly pulling blades.Must of been the cold front that moved threw.

3 way guy,
I have been doing some extensive open water crank trolling and found many cranks to work, but I have not given the taildancers their spot in the limelight yet. Were you running the taildancers back 200 ft with mono or fireline? Just looking to get all my taildancers wet. Any help would be appreciated.
We were out all weekend pulling cranks and did fair. The bite has really slowed for us as of lately. We ended up with about 10 fish/day. Just looking for some other opportunities.
thanks

DeeZee,
Had our best luck with 10/4 fireline 200 feet behind the boards. Also tried leadcore to get deep but it must have been too close to the boat.
