I was looking at the Spiderwire Fusion line yesterday and it seems to be very similar to Fireline. The only difference I could tell is that Fusion is slightly thicker diameter for the same strength and it also costs less than Fireline. I think the fusion is made from spectra fibers. Is fireline made from the same stuff? How does the fusion line perform? Will be using it to troll cranks, but would also consider it for jigging and rigging. Any input appreciated. Bret

MY 2 CENTS - I HAVE CHANGED A NUMBER OF MY RIGS TO FIRELINE AND I REALLY LIKE THE STUFF. SPIDERWIRE, IN MY EXPERIENCE, IS A LINE THAT MISBEHAVES BADLY ON THE REEL (SPINNING). SO MUCH SO THAT I HAD SPIDERWIRE ON A REEL AND ENDED UP TEARING IT OFF AND REPLACING IT WITH MONO OR FIRELINE IN THE MIDDLE OF A TRIP. IT WAS DRIVING ME CRAZY. KEPT SPRINGING INTO INTERWOVEN LOOPS AT THE SPOOL AND WHEN CASTING IT MADE SPIDER WEBS IN THE GUIDES (MAYBE THAT's HOW THE NAME WAS DERIVED). IN COLD WATER/WEATHER IT's WORSE. FIRELINE IS REALLY GOOD STUFF BUT NOT FOR ALL APPLICATIONS.

Fireline is my hands down line of choice. If you are fishing with a technique where fish might be line shy, go with a flourocarbon leader. If trolling, casting crankbaits, or fishing at night, no leader is needed. Fireline is tough, sensitive, and casts great, flourocarbon is almost invisible. Together they make a great combination. I like the flourescent green color Fireline, helps me see the line, which is critical for detecting light biters. Also glows at night under black lights.

I used spiderwire fusion for a two years, and it wasn't a bad line. It does have a lot less stretch than mono, but fireline has even less still. You are right, it's not as thin as fireline. The only real problem I had with it is that the line freyed easily, very easily. This isn't a problem with Fireline, as it does not frey.

The fusion is a good line, but it's not worth any more than it costs.

Try WHIPLASH....Berkleys new and hard to find superbraid. I use 4lb/20lb For approx 15 bucks you get 300 yards, twice the amount of fireline. Check out the Berkley Website for info. Similar to fireline, and stronger. I have been using since Fall and like it alot. Line is a bit slicker than fireline better for rod guides. Comes in 4/20 6/30 12/50 and stronger. White and Green. Maintains its color.

Overall I prefer Fireline, although I have not tried the whiplash previously mentioned. One catch at least for me was that for jigging with crawlers or minnows the fireline was almost too sensitive for my reaction time. I swithed over to mono for jigging and my on hook performance went up. Give it try and see how it works for you. Good luck!
