Going to purchase my first power auger this fall. I've used a hand auger for almost 10 years and am ready to take the step-up. My Question is.... What is the best auger on the market today, concidering all the facts? (Price, Performance, Dependability,Etc.) Any information will be greatly appreciated! Thanks Spider
I like Jiffy. I have been using the same jiffy 2hp for 12 years, and it still has the original spark plug in it. Always starts, runs great, and it's light enough to carry around, unlike some of those massive 3hp models. It doesn't cut as fast as some other brands, but it's been a great auger for me.

After owning two of the "economical" brands (recieved one as a gift) and fishing through thick ice,(12 inches or more) between 40-50 days per winter in Wisconsin, the next and only power auger I will haul out on the ice is a Jiffy. The type of fish your after will determine the size, which will affect cost but I recomend getting the 10 inch to start with for tip-ups and jigging larger game fish. Down the road you can get a smaller auger that fits on the same power head for panfishing but start with the larger head. If you can't spend that kind of money, my little brother recomends "Strikemaster" but he lives in 2nd place anyway. Wait for safe ice.

With my 3 h.p. Jiffy I'm never cold for long. . .I just grab the pig and after 10 or 12 holes the sweat beads begin to pop out!

Jiffy has served me well for 10 years. Nuff said. Budman
You know I'm not a very big guy, and I have trouble just drilling 5 holes with one of those heavy ones before my arms are shot.

My Dad has had a Magum Strikemaster for 15 years. It is an 8 inch auger. I have had a Magum2 Stikemaster for 5 years. We have not had a problem with them. They are a reasonable price. If you want to drill a hole fast Jiffy is the best. They drill a hole twice as fast as mine in thick ice, but cost more. A eight inch auger is just right for all kinds of ice fishing I think.
I've heard good things about the strikemaster augers also, and I agree that an 8 inch auger is about all you'll ever need, unless you're fishing for snot rockets or huge walleyes alot. I've pulled pike up to 14 pounds through an 8 inch hole though, so I don't plan on buying a bigger auger any time soon.

As long as your asking...haha...I have a strikemaster mag 2000 power auger(brand new..in the box)with a 10 1/4 inch blade that I have for sale or trade(looking for Vexilar fl8...trade auger + cash for Vex) Sorry for the shameless plug about my auger guys, but it just fit right in! By the way I have the same and it blows through the ice pretty good..even when I had an extension on it. Tight lines and bent poles for all!

Hey stump, how much are you asking for that auger?? I might be interested if the price is right. How old is it? Have you had any problems?? I have an FL-8 but I wouldnt trade it for the world (it is the most essential ice fishing tool as far a I am concerned). Please reply asap.

I have had a Strikemaster for 14 years and it was kinda slow with the old grinder blade but last winter I put a new lazer on it and I don't think there is a Jiffy that will touch it it litterally screws through the ice real fast.
Cost was 78$ at Fleet Farm for the auger only.
Get a Lazer you won't regret it.

buy a lazer and dont look back. very dependable, extremely light, very fast cutting. If you buy a jiffy I hope you have a strong back!

the new lazer will out cut any jiffy, seen it done and it was impressive---however money talks the loudest and it's all about what you can afford.
