Planning to fish the river for the first time this spring(just got my first boat). Seems like everyone jigs from what I hear. Would appreciate tips on what rod/reel combo works best, jig size, color, and what do you tip them with? Are there other methods that are equally as affective as jigging? Really want to catch a big female! Plan to release most of what I catch. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi Chad
(Hope your not hanging or pregnant.) LOL :-)
A good start on a jigging rod is the bass pro shops walleye series rod, 5'9" IM6 graphite. Or any med action 6'IM6 rod you feel comfortable with. Match this rod with a shimano symmetry 1000 reel, and you have a nice starter package under $150. I also recommend green 4/10 fireline with an 8# tippet of mono to tie the jig on.
As for jiggs get a "BUNCH" of 1/2, 5/8, and 3/4oz jigs. You should be able to find bulk jigs and twister tails at the Pontiac Sport Boat and Fishing Show starting this Wednesday at the Silverdome.
As far as other techniques to use on the detroit river, there is "handlining", trolling boards, bottom bouncers, "whipping", and "chugging".
If you want to find more about these techniques, come to the next Lake St Clair Walleye Association meeting, February 21st at 7:30pm at the East Point Eagles Hall in Eastpoint MI. Call 810-778-0480 to get more info on directions and membership.
Good fishing
