I am thinking about buying a short shaft motor for a kicker. I was told by the dealer if I can use one of those motor lifts. Those things that lift your motor up out of the water buy a handle. Please tell me if you have this or what you think of it.

I ran a short shaft kicker on a bracket for years and thought it was fine. But a few years ago I got a long shaft Honda and I discovered what I'd been missing all those years: reverse. With the short shaft I was fine while trolling, but had almost no control or thrust in reverse, which sometimes was a problem when trying to back away from shore on a windy day. With the long shaft, forward trolling is the same (maybe a little better steering control) but reverse was much improved.

Go with a long shaft. If you already own a short shaft it's better than nothing. Just don't buy a short shaft knowing ahead of time that you're going to use it for a kicker. Keeping the prop in the water while not burying the cowl is much easier with a long shaft.
