View Full Version : Rainy Lake
Heading up to Rainy Lake the first week in October, wondering if anyone has a fishing report. Water temp? Is the lake close to turning over? Thank you for the info.

I got back on 09/11, water temp. was 67* and dropping, eyes were still on reefs with the best action coming in 34-40ft. of water. I averaged 20-25 fish a day (8hrs.). In talking to the locals that was about as good as it got. Most were tiny with the biggest going 24in., but heard of bigger ones being caught. Straight lindy rigs with 3/4-1oz. weight with live bait worked SLOW, far out produced anything else. All I had were crawlers but minnows may have been better in watching other boats. I stayed in Ranier, Mn. and fished the east end of dryweed US side. Bass were small, 1# or less. Northern were being caught in bays with live bait and doing pretty well. I even managed to pick up a couple of nice crappie. Good luck, please post your results on your return.
Thank you for the information and I will post the results upon return.

We got back on the 21st.
Fished the Kettle Falls area - on the Canadian Side. Fishing was excellent with most fish between 22 and 28 feet of water.
Our best presentation was a 6' lindy rig/bare hook/chub. This was closely followed by a 1/8 ounce orange jig tipped with a chub.
The fish ranged between 13 inches and 27 inches with a lot of 18 to 20 inchers. We caught enough for a couple of fish fries and enjoyed throwing the others back.
Water wasn't so cold that one couldn't jump in and take a bath, but I wouldn't think that would be an option for you in several weeks!!
Good luck,
