Hey Scott, Zach, and Bob...

Got a chance to see most of the Fishing The Midwest show today, while working the baitshop. You guys did a great job! Unfortunately I didn't get to see the part where Zach lands the monster carp..dang. Someone needed minnows and the tv is on the other side of the store..:-(

Anyway, just wanted to say I enjoyed it!! ;-)

Yup, well done. Is Carp Central soon to come?

Incidentally, do I dare ask whether someone perhaps mismanaged the landing net on the carp?

Great multi-species outing -- helps vicariously until open water returns. Nice going.

But yea, I did get excited ;-)

I usually just hold the drag and let them break off when I'm fishing for walleyes, but since this one was important to Zach I thought I'd give a try at netting it. ROFLMAO

Nice show is right. Bob does a nice job and is actually a heck of a fisherman too. Sounds like you guys were having fun and I was right with you Scott when you tried to knock that carp off Zach's line for him. Don't want them things in the boat if you can help it. Good work you guys.

I don't net 'em either. First trip out in my new boat ('99), my buddy hooked the biggest rubber-lip that we had ever seen, he forced me to net it! Well he won the In_Fisherman award for largest carp in the region.

Doc, I keep seeing your mug on the opening credits. When is your turn on the show?

Scott, I am glad that I finally have a face to put with the name. If I ever ge the opportunity fish with you, please bring along a designated netter ;-)

What the heck is a "willowcat"? I saw the guys using them for bait and have never used them before. Thanx!

Week 11 or 12 is when Bob told me he figured it would air. That would be the last weekend in March or first one in April. Right around Wolf River walleye time.

If the fish are hitting I'll have to tape it.

It's a bait that has been used on the Mississippi River, specifically the Wabasha MN to LaCrosse WI areas, for many many years. It's proper name is the tadpole madtom. They are mainly a summer bait but can work magic well into October. On this particular episode, the walleyes and sandpike were pretty much off the willow cats for the year as the wingdam bite was dying off and were preferring pike minnows.

I learned how to fish willowcats back in the 80's from Steve Weisbrod, a great river fisherman from La Crescent, MN. He learned from HIS dad, who used to fish wingdams with a willowcat on the end of a cane pole.

Winona, MN is full of guys who are good with cats, guys like Rick Nascak (one of the best), Joe Wilson, Brian Erdman, Brad Kazcorowski, John Beman, and the list goes on. Give Brad a call at West End Bait in Winona for more info, or call Stacy at the Bait Shed.
