Someday spring will come and I'll cease to be bored again. But for now, who out there thinks they can answer this question???
What are the ten most popular live baits for walleyes??? (Yeah, I said ten...)

I second Minnesota's guess! :-)

Redbelly daces are also called rainbow daces. I don't think anyone's going to get all of them... There's a thing on this list that I've never seen or heard of and they didn't include a few that I would.... You're off by a few.

I'm really bored, so here goes:
1 - minnows
2 - nightcrawlers
3 - leeches
4 - Storm Deep Juniors
5 - Rapala #5 & #7
6 - Storm AJ's Purple Prizm are the best (but are no longer available, and the only person I know who has them would just as soon have his rectum sewn shut before he lets any of them go.LOL)
7 - Storm Baby Thunderstick
8 - Hot-n-tots
9 - DNR Shocking boat
10 - Dynamite

That's a pretty good selection I must say! However, I think Ness was looking for Live baits only.

Oh yeah, Mayflies forsure! I guess Ness never said the bait had to be legal! (As in perch & walleye fingerlings) Good answer!

Here are a few obscure ones that I can think of-
salamanders
mayflies
grass shrimp
tadpoles
bluegills
crappies
perch
baby gardener snakes
toads
earth worms
waxies/mousies
crayfish
field mice
chipmunks
baby chickens
small children
tie on a 20 lb. northern and see if he comes up with a walleye in his belly(hehehe!)

If you combine a couple from this list with my previous list am I close???

Up where I am from there is a difference between redbelly and rainbow. The rainbows have a different (yellow) belly. I talked to the bait guy (he is Canadian)and he said that all dace are the same, some just have a different color faze, males and females have different colors as well. I don't know anything about it, I do know that different parts of the country have different names for the same minnows. I see that someone has listed chubs, well around where I live in the summer, they call chubs, fatheads, and they call redtails, river chubs........so I would guess that we will see a lot of different names for a lot of the same critters.

some good guesses here, i just wanted to say when i do keep a fish i always check the stomach contents to see what their choice is. try to match the hatch if you will.

by at least two, maybe three... depends. What are you calling a
sucker???? Give me another name. This one so called bait... I'm not sure if it uh... er, does that? It sure is ugly..... Mind you, I don't personally agree with this list... I would think some other baits would be on it that aren't but hey, I'm not an expert so maybe I'm wrong.

You gave me twenty-seven answers to a ten answer question??? They let you do that in the Minnesota school district???? Hey, teacher, I put down ten answers for that fill in the blank question. You mean, they were all wrong? LOL

GIVEN THE CHOICE,FISH ALWAYS WILL TRY TO EAT THE BIGGEST AND EASIEST-TO-CAPTURE FOOD THEY CAN FIND. I DON'T BELIEVE ANYONE HAS LISTED THE MADTOMS ALSO CALLED "WILLOW CATS"

Minnesotans always go above and beyond.

Atta boy, Drewpy.
Since all the baits have been listed by one or another person :-)
I'll post the list but I don't think we can actually say that anyone actually won.... So that means, hehehehe, I stumped the Board :-)
1. Golden Shiner
2. spottail shiner
3. redbelly dace, or rainbow (Listed as same thing)
4. hornyhead chub or redtail chub (Listed as same thing)
5. fathead minnor, tuffy or mudminnow (Listed as same thing)
6. madtom, or willow cat :-)
7.salamander or waterdog
8. ribbon leeches
9. nightcrawler
10. leopard frog.

As far as I know, there's nothing illegal listed???? I was surprised to see the absence of helgramites??? And just what the
heck is a madtom?????? Got a picture of one. Heavens, there are
worse critters out there than leeches to handle!!!!!!!!
These are not in order of popular preference. They are just considered to be the most popular of live baits for walleye. Of course, I imagine that it would vary from region to region and we all have our special names for different things... I can just imagine how much controversy will develope when I hit this Post
It button.... Oh well, we argue over dumber things :-)

Is the last one a lamprey? I see them a lot, but I've never thought of putting one on my hook.

Not if a Minnesotan wears a Purple uniform and helmet with a horn on it! But then if you consider choking as something, then they excell!!!!!!!!

Want Purple Prizm's?
01-29-2001, 08:14 PM
Call Bayshore resort in Gladstone MI, on the shore of Little Bay de Noc. They have a link here on the walleye links. Ask for Connie or Naomi, they will ship them to you if you order enough of them.

WORLDS BEST WALLEYE TACTIC!!!!!!!

Opps, I guess I misunderstood the question. Those are walleye forage favorites, not "bait" to be used to catch walleyes. Sorry, my bad. Thanks for the heads up!

(Well, the fingerlings anyway. I have used a fly rod and mayfly nymph to successfully catch walleyes during the hatch.)
