View Full Version : Huron
I fished off huron last night from 6:45 till 10:45 and never had a hit..
Because it got real bumpy out about a mile ( tough 20knot+ s/west wind) we were somewahat lmited as to where we could fish. The water looked good but there were very few bait fish..
We did speak with one fellow angler just leaving who said he knew a guy that had nailed limited three miles north east of the peir heads during the day thurs..We were the only boat out on the lake but the peir was busy with anglers..Never saw a fish netted there either but who knows?.Tight lines..Len
Plan on going out tomorrow Sunday Dec.2,any new info would be appreciated. Are they still up high?Any particular colors? Thanks guys,Keith Walters(Kdog)

As Skipnskul said, the 27/29 lines and some were also taken at the28/30 and 28/31 lines today(saturday) the colors varied, but one thing that was working was the 25 to 35 foot back from the boards. the speed was from 1.2 to 1.7 mph. good luck and good fishin. reefrunners were the baits again too.

I was at 28/32 line today- Pulled 6 eyes. 30' back 1.4mph. Eriedescent, Huckleberry, Firetiger & PinkLemonade & Chartruese with RedHead ReefRunners.
Fished on Sat. pulled 5 in 5 hrs. biggest 10lb on easteregg RR 180 back, 1 on blue and CR. 100 back the rest 25 back on Huckleberry. fished a few miles east of Airwave. Nice bumpy day on the big pond I hope things keep picking up!!!!
We fished NW off Huron on Saturday afternoon/evening. Pulled one nice fish "O" the moment we sat down. Unfortunately, a guest became sick and add to that...GPS trouble, so we decided to head back in to shore. Pulled several after dark on a Clown Husky Jerk 35' back. One just off the mouth of the river (18') and a couple east 2-3 miles.

I fished last night out of Huron from 9:00-12:00 and came home with an empty cooler. Trolled reef runners and ripsticks about 4 miles NE of the river. I also tried around the mouth of the river. I did have one hook up that broke my line. I talked with one guy that caught two just before dark. He said they were both about 5 pounds. I'm really dissapointed because I think that will be my last time out this year.
Tom
Fished the 28-32 line from 2:00 until a hour after dark anf caught 4 walleyes with an 11 pounder being the biggest.Another boat that was workin with me caught 3 in that area .Colors that were working were Huckleberry,Eriedescent,FruitLoops,RedHOtTiger,Reb elQueen. From there we went to Ruggles in 19 ft and caught 2 eyes and lost one.Beautiful nite to fish.TightLines,Kdog

Sundance,
You didn't mention your guest chumming with corn Saturday night! My little flurry of action came right after that in shallow water by Cranberry.
Sunday was a beautiful day with a slow bite. We caught four before dark and 1 after dark all on lil rippers and Ripsticks. All of our fish have been falling off in the net and aren't hooked good at all. They aren't the typical lure in the throat action you expect this time of the year. There's still no overall pattern except for up high day or night and a few being caught deep.
Your comment about those Michigan girls went over better than I thought it would! I didn't get thrown in or anything!
Finally had a relatively decent night of fishing last night, although the numbers of fish in the boat did not represent the action we had. We fished off the castle 20-25 feet of water. We fished from 5:00pm-10:00pm and were able to put 4 fish in the boat. However, we lost another in the net, we had two more hooked that got off when we were reeling them in and we had two more grab the lure and drag the board behind the boat, but by the time we got to the rods they let go. So we had 9 hook-ups in approximately 4 hours. The fish we did get in the boat were not hooked very well. So, the fish must not have been feeding agressively. All of the fish that we hooked were on shallow diving blue, chrome and orange Husky Jerk and one on a clown Husky Jerk. They were the shallow running Husky Jerks back 100 feet off the boards. It was a falt lake, a big moon and comfortable temps, made for an all around nice night out.
My son and I also fished sunday eve (4:00 til 7:00 p.m.) and had some success..We had five strikes~ hooked four fish and put two in the cooler..A six pound steelie and a nine pound eye..My boy fought em all and had a blast..I just wish we could have kept more of them hooked!
Our hot bait was the big husky jerk (chart/red head) run thirty feet behind a tru trac board. The steelie took a perch colored storm d/t/stick jr. back fourty feet.We had a great time out there! What a gorgeous dec. night on lake erie..Tight lines all...Len.. Can anyone tell me if the bite normally dies or improves at dark out there?
Len,
So for this year it has died most nights. Hopefully that will change when the water temps drop a little.
Mr Twister and I fished the 28-32 area 3p-7p Monday, 3 in boat with 1 8lb+. 2 were caught 40' back and 1 back 100'on reefrunners. Just like Sunday, "all" our fish hit between 4:30 and 5:30p.
I fished again last night. Fishing was a little slower than the night before. We had 5 hook ups but only got 2 in the boat. I do not know what is going on with the fish getting un-glued. In past years we never had any where near the amount of fish getting off. Other guys talking on the radio sounded like they had the same problem. We fished from about 5:00 pm to 10:00pm and had all of our hook ups between 7:00-8:30. The fish disappeared off the screen after about 8:30, so either they moved in closer to shore or they moved back off to deeper water. Had to work today, so could not stay out real late to track them down.
Glad to hear you didn't get into trouble!
Time to sharpen the hooks!! If I recall, ours weren't hooked that well either on Saturday. Don't feel bad about Sunday. A friend went out and fished from 7:00AM-8:00PM...2 Eyes
I won't be back out until this weekend..Saturday evening
Good luck!

John this is only my guess by I believe the eyes are not starving for food and are just biting out of instinct because you got it near them or biting light because they are not real hungry and don't really care if they get it or not.Just kinda going after it sorta lazy ... Just a guess though.

Brion,
I think you're pretty close on your reason why the light hookups are going on. I'd add curiosity as a factor too. We'd probably have even less hookups if it weren't for those supersharp Reefrunner hooks.
Brion, when i filleted the fish i caught sunday i checked their stomachs to see what they were eating and to my surprise i didnt find anything in them.So i dont know about the full belly theory, lol.Tight Lines,Kdog

We also fished Huron on 12/2, from 12:30 PM till after dark. Went 6 for 9. 5 of the fish were 6-8 lbs., and the sixth one went 11 lbs-5 oz (soon to be residing on my wall). We had 2 hits about 3PM, one came off almost imediately and the other I knocked off with the net (first time I've managed to do that. My son was one the rod, and he was as upset about it as I was. Looked like a 9-10 lb fish). All was quiet till about 1/2 hour before dark and then all heck broke loose. We had seven hits in that half hour, one double. One came off very soon after it hit the lure. 5 0f the 6 came on the same lure, a purple Ripstick. Several times that lure got hit before the board got back into position while resetting it. The 11+ fish came right at dark and everything shut down for us after that. Ours were not hooked well either. The lure fell out of the 11 lb after we netted it. Another thing I noticed while cleaning the fish, although they look fat as heck, everyone had an empty stomach.

It doesn't take long for them to digest their food. I'm sure they can digest as fast as we can. So they may be empty today, but was full yesterday.
Good Luck!!

After knocking that fish off....I would have begged forgiveness...I KNOW the FEELING....unfortunately...Both ways...
You`ll know it when they are feeding hard..They will inhale the lures AND~ have several fresh shad or shiners in there mouths/throats..Their tails sticking out at you almost still wigggling..lol
I`ve cleaned a bunch of them at this time of year (peir fish) where there appeared to be no way they could have possibly ate the bait you caught them on! One 31" fish last winter had a seven inch white perch in its throat. Then he tried to inhale my lure.Talk about a mouthful ,eh!.
I think they are yet to really turn on and gorge themselves for winter.Of course time will tell if that will happen..I only hope a bunch of us are on them if or when that bite comes this year....Tight lines....Len

Fortunatly my son is too young to realize how good of a fish it was. If it happens again in a year or two, I'll be toast.

One thing that might help keep those short hooked fish on into the net would be to add a stinger to the back of the crank. It really helps on the Detroit in spring. We use Northland trebels that are made for the Fireball Jig, clipped to the back of the bait next to the O ring that holds the original trebel. It will hookem in the throat when the back hook catches the skin of the lip. The fight is really weird if the fish is only on the stinger they feel much heavier because the crank is still trying dive. It feels like a 8lb eye on a untripped dipsey. I'd recommend mono or your barely be able to move the fish. Good Luck

Thanks Flats,
Duh! Sometimes the obvious escapes me and I have to be reminded.
I thought about adding to the cranks, but I am affraid it will change the action. We were using the bigger of the 3 hook Husky Jerks and the smaller of the 3 hook Husky Jerks, both in the same color. The smaller one was catching far more fish than the bigger one. The sizes are not that much different, however there is a lot more action on the small lure than the bigger one. Therefore, by adding a singer hook draging off the back might change the lure action enough to effect the way these finicky fish are hitting. Just a thought....

Not sure about Husky Jerks but it doesn't effect Reef Runners. You might be correct since Jerks roll. I've never really trolled slow enough that lure action is an issue. You might consider switching all hooks to the smaller size. I know those fish do have a size preference that can change from school to school. There is alot of different species of bait fish out there and I think changing size is just as important as color. Looking back to spring in the western basin(pre-spawn), with the fish eating in the top 10' of water almost all our fish came on deep lil rippers and lil rippers. I'm sure the light penetration makes the profile of the bait appear larger. Just a thought.
