View Full Version : New to trolling
I am a Erie Dearie fisherman.Recently I purchased a boat that came with Big Jon Planer board set up.
Problem is, I have a very basic idea how to use them but I am a raw beginner at this type of fishing . Please get me started in the right direction with any tips or suggestions you might have. What lures, lines ,etc .
I purchased the trollers bible already.
I really like to cast and catch fish, is this type of fishing fun or a lot of work ???
Thank You

I don't type fast or well enough to answer your whole question but I'll gladly post my opinion on trolling! I too enjoy jigging, three way rigging, slip bobber fishing etc. But when conditions alow, trolling is both deadly effective and most of all FUN! In the heat of the summer its great to take the wife and my 5 year old son out trolling. My wife enjoys the sun and my son loves reelin em in. I really enjoy watching both of them have a great time on the water. Don't get me wrong about my reason for trolling, It is not NOT no brainer fishing by any means. It is however, (for me) A great way to both catch alot of fish and not have to deal with tangled lines and fish hooks in the back of the head. If you get my drift.I think it's important for my son to have fairly constant action to keep his interest.Aside from catching bluegills with bobbers, this is another way to up the totals and fuel his desire to fish.Have Fun <;{{{{{<<( Mr.Pike

Mike this type of fishing is both fun and a lot of work. But not as hard as it may sound and IF catching fish is Fun to you then there's your answer. Getting the Precision Trolling Book was a good first step.I always recommend the best way to learn this technic is to find someone who does it and take one trip with them. You will learn more in one day of hands on training then a month trying to explain. If you don't have any luck finding someone give me a shout. Always willing to show someone -thats how I learned. GOOD FISHIN

I agree go out with a experience person or a charter in you area & learn.
In Michigan part of Lake Erie Trolling always out produces drifting.

Mike, Take a look at the 'full size planer vs in-lines' string below stated by ETT. Good information.
I love to troll for WALLEYES! I like long lining without the use of boards. Over shallow structure or suspended fish I like to use the jointed Mirrolures, and when the fish are deeper than twelve feet Sparkletails work good. Try a lure that puts you at the right depth for the conditions you find at the time.
