I have two Zercom "Clearwater Classics". I use them for fishing fly-in trips to Canada several times a year. They are mounted on old Eagle portable boxes that use two six volt lantern batteries. I can run over two weeks on one set of batteries. And Zercom claims they will run twenty hours on a pair of 9 volt batteries. So I carry two 9v batteries in the portable box for backup power and have never had to use them.
I've no experience with the vexlar. There are some old discussions about Vexilar vs. Zercom in the Walleye Central archives. Seems to be evenly divided. You know, Chevy vs. Ford thing...
Good luck.

depends on if you own one or the other...they both do the job and i don't think there is a third place ice fishing rig...basically the vex has color... better interference ability...(ie if another vex is nearby the signals don't interfere w each other...and the zircom i have has more power 1000 watts vs 6oowatts which means better separation of targets and better deep water signals...my unit is the clearwater classic 2el which is not color but in daylight outside my unit is definitely better to see the fish....my unit has dials vs buttons which reeds sports told me was better because the buttons can get water on them and freeze...zircom is cheaper also....the older zircom colorpoint was supposed to have lots of problems...i think they came out with a new model this yr and know nothing about the new colorpoint...i may be mistaken as to if they have a new colorpoint...from what was on this site last yr i would not get one of the older colorpoints...my unit has been 100% great...steve...also the interference on my unit when a vex is nearby is minimal ...you see a blip slowly go around the dial...steve

you are lucky here because you really cant lose...both
are fine, both do the job. zercom color point and the
vexilar FL8 have only minor differences. both companies
provide excellent service....i have the vexilar but it was
only because they won the coin toss

I have a Zercom Colorpoint I would like to sell. Only used it 3 times. Just not really into ice fishing. E-mail if your interested. fgrems@home.com Fred

I have to say the the Zercom is a outstanding product. I own a Zercom Clearwater Classic and a Zercom Clearwater Pro. I use the Classic for ice fishing and on the boat and it performs very well in both applications. There is nothing wrong with the Vexilar, I have several friends that use it for ice fishing, but none of them use this product on their boats. In my opinion the Zercom is a better unit for winter/summer use, and the Vexilar seems to be unit made for winter use only. Again, this is only my opinion.

I'm interesred in your colorpoint. How much do you want for it?

I am asking $200. Seems fair since the lowest price I've seen is $250 with the rebate. Fred

I use my Vexilar FL8 on the bow attached to the trolling motor in the summer. I find it invaluable for jigging and tracking a certain depth, (not all of us can afford pinpoints). No experience with Zercom but wouldn't trade the Vex.

TBO,
I just ordered the puck transducer for the FL8 and will get the transom mount before spring. I'm looking forward to using it on my bowmount for smallmouths on Erie. Do you have any experience with them reading "at speed"? I want to use it to look for fish/baitfish. Thanks.
