Hi Guys,
I want to replace my old LORAN with a GPS. I fish around Vermilion and Huron. I would like to stay under $500. I also would like to know when I am getting into Canada. Any suggestions on make and model would be a big help. Thanks.

A unit a couple friends of mine just purchased is the Garmin 176C. The C stands for color. It is available in B/W also for $100.00 less. It is a map system and has the new Waaz tecnology installed. It is also portable. I've seen the thing work and I liked it alot. It retails for $499.00 I believe. They got thiers at West Marine.I'm thinking seriously about getting one for my self. LOL- Hey I kept ya under $500.00...:)

Id have to agree with that 176C Unit. I work at West Marine in Pittsburgh, and by far this unit just blew my mind. 1st of all its a WASS Reciever so its up to date there. It is fully detachable from its mount and can run on 4AA bateries. Then ur lookin at a unit that accepts all of garmin's Map source CD's which means its just as useful in the car as it is on the water. It also is capable of running the New Blue Chart programs. For lake Erie by far this is one ##### of a unit. The blue chart Gives u depth coutour, launches and a ton more detail for about 160 Bucks thats a steal compared to the old G Chips u used to buy for like 300 bucks a piece. When u get the blue chart for erie too. ur gettin all of lake erie, the western part of Ontario and a bunch more finger lakes in the area as well.

This unit is great for erie boats, and there are larger units than this too with the same capabilities. Also in ur case the 176C is able to be converted into the TD lines, so u still can use ur same lines from ur loran.

If u wana buy this unit it will run u about $600 + whatever upgrades u wish to go to bluecharts are about 160 bucks a piece and there are a bunch of locations to chose from. Stop in at a West Marine, or stop at the One in Pittsburgh and see me (ask for Jeff if u call)

Ok i think thats enough said.
CB.

I purchased a Raynav 300 earlier this year. Love it! It has the WAAS technology, plotter(great), etc. Should be able to buy one now for about $550.00
Raytheon's site has a full decription of this technolgy as well as report from "Powerboat".

My apologies. The unit does run $499.00 for the B/W and 599.00 for the color. plus you'll probably want a chip for the area your fishing that details everything from where to get fuel to resturants to hot spots Etc. They run about 140.00.

Only problem with that is that Garmin has discontinued the production of these units. They once were garmin's top of the line handheld. They have a GPS V (5) out now.

I have the Garmin 162, love it, very user friendly, gives the whole area, and you don't have to be a rocket scientist to use it. Paid $400 for it at West Marine in Toledo, Ohio.

LOL,

I recently bought a Lake Erie Fishing Boat and this past weekend, I bought a Magellan 300x unit at Staples for ~$100 after rebates and an internet code. I don't know how good it is, but it is a handheld unit (orig. $300) and came with a DC power cord, holder, computer cable and CD-rom software. It has the WAAS technology and they claim 3 meter resolution. For the money, I figured it was a good place to start
