View Full Version : Message board etiquette RE: brands

Just a message board etiquette question for everybody.

There have been a few discussions lately asking about specific brands (the stradic or symetre was one of them), where any info about other brands is frowned upon.

I don't quite understand this, because if any one of my friends asked me about a specific brand, I'd tell him what I know about it and then tell him any other information I think he may be interested in.

Even if he's not interested in the info, he won't snap at me like some people on this board.

Also, using the reel discussion as an example, there are many other people on this board who have read the discussion, just because they are interested in the topic, and find any and all information, shimano or not, usefull and interesting.

Also, most of the time, when people volunteer information about brands other than those that are asked about, they are trying to be helpfull, that's all, yet, a lot of them are accused of having hidden agenda.

Personally, I try to volunteer as much information that I have, so as to help people. And in turn, I appreciate any info given to me, whether I find it usefull or not.

Is this one of those unwritten rules that I just don't get?

In my opinion you are right on target. The reel thread got to be silly.

If, however, someone was asking about a good place to stay on Leech Lake, it would be inappropriate to wax eloquent about some fine Lake of the Ozarks spa. Or, if someone wanted tips on river presenttions, it wouldn't be so cool to describe Lake Erie trolling patterns.

On equipment, certainly you're right.

right cisco....

when someone asks about a good place to stay on lake of the
woods and they get a bunch of places on rainy lake and
winnie and "gosh knows where else" it doesnt seem helpful.

it shouldnt have gotten to be such a big deal, but if someone
asks something specific regarding a comparison between TWO
products...why bring in 3 and 4 and 5. give the guy (or girl)
some credit on bringing the decision down to 2.

I like to see as much information as possible, as long as it is relevent.

I too love to have "All" the info possible.

But the issue I see becoming more prevalent on the board would be people who are sponsored by competing Brand X touting X without telling us they have some financial relationship with Brand X.

Just an opinion..

River-eye, your point is well taken and I agree that to expound beyond the realm of the question needs to based on the direction of the thread. Specifically, the Shimano thread, demonstrated that the direction of the posting displayed some concern over the quality of those reels based on actual experience. Whether or not the original post(er) intended to gather that type of information, it bore some relevant data which opened a very clear need for a comparison or alternative. TM neither bashed Shimano nor offered rhetoric. His post was well timed and welcomed, IMHO. What was not welcomed was the bashing he took for that information. THAT was irresponsible.

The timing and location of information on this board may not always be what everyone wants, but cutting someone down for providing that information is disrespectful and not needed. Rather, bite your tongue and get up from the keyboard for 5 minutes. Re-read the post with a new perspective and you may find the info helpful. Just because you do not find it pertinent does not mean someone else does not.

To those that seam bent on posting information regardless of the question, use your best judgement. If the direction of the post seams to call for new info, by all means add it. Otherwise, try to keep the flavor. Most of all - be kind and relax!

If it was me asking the question of Symeter vs. Stradic, or any similar comparisons, I would certainly not be offended by opinions of other related type products. I wouldn't give it a second thought. I'd be appreciative of any input, just to increase my knowledge.

The additional information may be helpful to someone else beside the original poster of the query.

I feel "sponsored" folks, or anyone that could possibly gain tangibly, commenting on products they represent should state that fact.

I guess it's been a long winter, even down here in Florida.

Later....

I agree with that. You have to respect that if a person has narrowed their vacation choice to one body of water, they've already had to wade through lots of other sales pitches.

That's kind of what I was getting at, the discussions as a whole provide information to many more than just the people participating in it.

A lot of the time, I just don't feel like typing, but still read a lot, and pick up what usefull info I can.

That sums it up right there River Eye. If some people want to offer information that may not be exactly what the question was, but related, then so be it. It could be very valuable to someone else, while the original poster may go right by it. I will never tell someone to keep their information to themselves. This message board is based on trading information of our knowledge, let it happen.
