Sag can be an awesome body of water if the time is right. The best time to fish Sag is definately the first two weeks of June on an ordinary year, a bit later with a long winter. At this time the fishing will be real hot in the Red rock area, south bays of the lake, and the main lake points on the American side, and if you venture north into Canada, tne narrows into northern light lake and the lake itself are fantastic, some of the best walleye-Smallmouth water in the world, definately of oligotrophic lakes. Later in the season around idependence day the walleyes on Sag can be tough, but some fish can always be caught on the main lake transition, near Englishmen Is. and federal point, with larger fish, upto 32" being suspended gorging on cisco and smelt. Balls of baitfish, graphed in water 25-40 feet can be extremely hot, trolling raps and bombers on leadcore or clip weights throgh these schools will produce trophies guaranteed, not to mention 25+ inch macks. Even with the blowdown of 1999 this is still one of the best backcountry lakes in the lower US. Mr. Wallard likes!!!

Thanks for the info Mr. Wallard. I appreciate it very much. Sounds as if you have been on the lake a few times. I did fish the lake last year on July 13th weekend, and did very well on slip bobbers and leeches. Had two 30 inchers in the boat and a half dozen 27 plus inches. Going up in June this summer and will definitly check out devils walk area and south bays. Maybe see ya up there. Merrry X-mas.

When I fished Sag, the rule was pretty much the earlier in the season, the better. I've made the trip in May, June, July, August, September & October. We did the best in May. Fish the northern side of the lake, like Curran's Bay, or thr brackish water of James Bay.

Hey Bell. First off, thank you for your reply. Just wondering why you say earlier the better? How did you fish during the different months? Was it hard to get permits for your trips? Thanks for the info, appreciate it.

Permits, no, when I went there Customs was still operating. I did fax in a RBC permit and got one a couple of years ago, it has since expired. As for the day use permits, never a problem.
In May we have trolled and we have done slip bobbering. Guide caught a 26" in Curran's trolling. Guide took us back the next day & my Buddy caught a 29-1/2' on a bobber and lost a larger one about a 1/2 hour later, that's three hawgs out of my boat on Sag & I told him that was enough. I lost my trophy in Powell's Bay a couple of years later, different buddy who didn't know how to net, but he could fly the plane.
