I have been reading this board for awhile but have never posted, mostly cuz' I don't know the answers to any of the questions. I am curious what is considered bashing? I have read posts where one guy will say he thinks a certain boat doesn't ride as smooth as another and no one says anything. And then I have read posts where someone will say he thinks a certain boat is nose heavy, and everyone jumps all over him. The same things goes on with rods, reels, fish finders, motors, ect. So what is the differentiation here, are opinions only valid in certain situations?

I have no clue as to defining it - maybe, "Wild hair day"! I don't know!

Bashing is when I say, " Of course you can't answer a fishing question, you're from Minn.!". Not bashing and making a statement or opinion is when I say, " Don't worry about knowing everything. You have knowledge that will help someone, somewhere put more fish in the boat. We just have to find the situations that match your experience." Bashing usually refers to when someone takes an unnecessary shot at someone else's opinion or equipment. Keep reading and learning from everything that fits your fishing styles and methods and try to skip over the bad stuff that gets going and is a waste of time. If you do get dumped on needlessly from anyone with a differing opinion sometimes it's just easier to ignore the loser that "BASHED" you.
Remember, this is just their opinion and it don't mean much.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-30-01 AT 01:22PM (CST)[p]hi scott,
i think it all comes down to how you present your argument. there are many ways to say things and how we say things determines the response we get from others.

let's say you love widgets, but i've had problems with them. if i were to post "widgets suck and i'd never buy one of those pieces of crap", no doubt i just bashed and would provoke an appropriate response. on the other hand if i posted: "i once owned a widget and probably would not get another because it leaked oil from day one and customer service just gave me a runaround when i tried to get the problem resolved. for these reasons i would not buy another". the second post is based on personal experience and intended to give you the buyer a heads up on issues with the product and not a slam. in general if i have a negative comment to make i back up my remarks with my personal experience and rationale, so it can weighed in with the rest of the input. hope this helps.

Yeah, what you said sib and SUPERTROLLER. I would agree and please don't think I was being evasive in my answer - there are a lot of times I can't, for the life of me, figure out why people say what they say and I ain't no dang kid, either. I've been around for a LONG time and still can't figure it.

Bashing often starts out with "my uncles, friends, brother in law had a ________ (fill in the blank)that was a piece of_________ (fill in the blank.)
I think you get the idea.

This is what I would call bashing, just a comment that has no purpose other than to express negative energy towards someone or somthing. It's usually based more on emotion, than fact.

I bet if he had a gps, he could get the camel to walk at about 1.2 mph, and with some planer boards he could get his spinner rigs out far enough to one side to run up next to that rock bar/mudline... maybe even get the camel to pause once in a while to trigger some strikes!

Then there is the "counter-bash", which is a comeback to the basher from the bashee. This is my personal favorite as I feel a right to let someone have it for bashing me.LOL- in all seriousness I try not to do that but sometimes your fingers start typing before........

Yeah, man, got ya' on that! If we could spur the camel to 3.2 mph we could search for some salmanoids or Lakers, too!!

Good eye, River Eye. Hope before my questionable reputation becomes too sullied, that all realize that my post was made with tongue planted firmly in cheek ;)

Well, I can't see a thing wrong with saying what you really think. If one guy has to say it as "they suck" while another says the same thing, but uses 45 words to say it, so be it. Not everybody on this forum are college boys. Not everybody in the U.S. cares about being politicaly correct. Farmers in North Dakota talk a little differently than people who live in Manhattan NY. A rancher in Idaho expresses himself differently than an attorney in San Fancisco. Some auto mechanics just say "Ouch" when they skin thier knuckles. Others elicit many more words than that. I've listened to people in all those places express themselves. Ever read Bill Buckley's argument regarding the use of the word fu**? Ever read the US Supreme Court case about Larry Flynn v Jerry Falwell? Ever listen to George Carlin's comedy routines? Ever read Gerry Spence's argument about political correctness in his book "Give Me Liberty"? I hope people will remain honest in their communications - - in whatever form that may be.

> If one guy has to say it as "they suck"....

I can think of only a few products which suck (milking machines, vacuum cleaners, breast pumps, solder stations). In most of those cases saying "they really suck" would seem to be a high recommendation to purchase them.

On the other hand, saying that a fishing rod "sucks" (when it obviously cannot) indicates lack of the ability to express your thoughts clearly. :-)

Words often have more than one meaning.
Webster's New World College Dictionary, 3ed., 1996. p.1337.

suck - to be contemptable or very unsatisfying, as because of low quality [this show sucks]
