I have a little dilemma. Sounds like a good buy initially for any of us pulling that old walleye boat with a pickup or SUV that is in need of new tires as is my truck.

Next fact is that they are Firestones. We all know the past history of that specific brand of tire.

Hidden costs include $9.99 for mounting and balancing per tire. Also a $2.95 disposal fee per tire. If my math is correct $ 77 for each or $308 for a complete set is what these tires would cost me.

We are talking about a 60,000 mile radial tire here. I don't know the facts on temperature nor traction as stated on all tires but will find that out. They are an all-season radial but not necessarily an off road tire. They appear that the tires would be ideal for my mostly highway use.

I have two friends that have already installed these on their pickup and blazer. Both have told me that they have gotten credit ($40 and $30) for their used tires. This would bring the deal down to $268 to $278 for a new set of tires. Good buy or not and how come????

I was putting money away in anticipation of spending $600 for a new set of tires sometime in the near future. The above deal sounds like a steal but they have been on sale for two weeks and are still on sale this week and I haven't made the move. Do I value life too much by not purchasing Firestones which has earned a bad name or what? Any one else buy these tires from Tires Plus(tiresplus.com)? If so please inform us as to what you have found out about these tires.

I have been told that the tires in question (the ones blowing up) were just the 15 inch tires but have also heard that Firestone had problems with 16 inch tires too. I cannot confirm this and would appreciate anyone who could enlighten us on that subject also.. If Firestone just had problems with the 15" tires I would not have much of a problem going out and buying the 16" tires then. boy this got long; sorry Please reply Thanks

I put Michelin LTX M/S on last time. Spendy, but worth every cent on snow, and ice. Never noticed that big of a difference on any Firestone, Goodyear, or BFGoodrich that I've had in the past. I run a 2 wheeler, limited slip, and a bunch of sand. If I had 4x4 I wouldn't be nearly as picky about rubber.

I run BF Goodrich on my 4x4. I have complete confidence in their ability to do their job. If you do not have 100% confidence in your tires get a set that will give you that. Tires are a small percentage in price to the overall cost of a vehicle and in my eyes the mosy important part of a vehicle.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-31-01 AT 07:21AM (CST)[p]There are still a lot of Firestones out on the road. From what I've heard under inflation was the problem. I had Firestones as my last set of tires and they were great tires. Got a good deal on a different brand with the almost identical tread pattern so I went that route. Lots of new Chevy's have Firestones.

I don't care for Tires Plus. They tried to pull one over on my wife. Wife takes car in for quote on brake job to two places. Tires Plus and local boy with reputable shop. This is a town of 12,000 people. Tires Plus has the car on the rack with wheels off for 2 hours and gives a QUOTE, not an estimate. Local boy gives a quote with a brief look. Local boy $60 higher. Tires Plus gets job. Car not ready when stated it would be. Bill $60 higher than quote. Needed some more parts. I told her to go down there and get the keys and then write them a check for the QUOTED price and if they don't like it............ They've lost my business.

Ristorapper,

I bought a used Suburban last summer. The truck had 46,000 miles and a well used set of Firestones (255 16). The only thing that was wrong with them is that the tread was lookin like my head, BALD. I replaced them with B.F. Goodrich. Now this was before the whole Firestone fiasco. I simply perferred the Goodrich tire. As far as I know the only bad tires are 15's. I would not be affraid to buy the Firestones. The xtra money will help re-fill the tackle box.

I bought the Goodrich tires at a SAM's club store. Mounting, balancing and a lifetime free rotation and re-balancing for a few bucks over $500.00. Hope this helps. TM

I've put 60,000 miles each on two sets of Firestone 16" (Wilderness ATX, I believe) -- only problem was a blowout when I didn't fix a slow leak and let inflation drop while driving on interstate (my bad!). My third set of tires on the '95 Chevy 4x4 are blems I bought at a discount tire store when I couldn't find Goodyears at an uninflated ;-) price.

Risto, You don't say which tire thay are offering, but I have both the 15" on the Explorer and the 16" on the Suburban. The Firestone Wilderness AT. Ewwww! What ever!

The tires are great and I have not had one problem with either. The Explorer had 2 tires that were under the recall and we had those replaced, no questinos asked. They offered to replace with another brand, but did not see any benifit since I ahd tried the ones they were offereing and did not like them.

Prior to the recall, I was touting those tire on here as being one of the better ones I have ever run and I stand by that claim. I have had the GoodYear Wrangler, the Michelin XT and the Bridgestone Dualer AT. If these tires were not loud they wore out fast or were rough riding and wondered.

Here's the deal, I have 20K on my 'Stones on the burb and they still look new. They track nicely, they are quiet and provide good grip in snow and ice. They don't roll in the corners or bounce on the bumps. I keep them inflated, balanced and rotated with regualrity.

Face it, if you don't like them you can always take them back for a pro-rated credit. Tire Plus has a satisfaction guarentee.
