Considering getting a helmet to use when running on the water. Protection from water, cold and windshield when running. Any Ideas or suggestions.

Hey Waz,
I was thinking along the same lines. I am looking into Snowmobile helmets. I like the idea of a full face shield and i want to see if there is some kind of collar that comes down out of the helmet to protect the neck as well.
Good luck......R
I looked at Motorcycle helments yesterday, very uncomfortable on my big head.

With open water on the Illinois & Mississippi Rivers during Nov. thru March, and the Sauger bite on we have been using helmets for quite a while. I think you need to go with a full face, it will help keep the wind out of your face. Just my thought on the matter.

I have worn a snowmobile helmet during cold weather for years. The full face shield helps keep the cold and wind out of your face and most important to me, the eyes. People will look at you a little funny, but who cares. I drive a tiller boat with no windshield, the face mask is my protection.
Good luck, Murph!

A helmet for fishing. You girls can't be serious. What is this world coming to? Now I've heard it all.

Hey, Murph, longtime no see. How's Leech been this year?
Cool, glad to see some of you guys actually do this. I also run a tiller and get a ton of guff from partners and friends about mine until we are running into or quartering the wind. I use my snowmobile helmet with the anti fog sheild. In cool weather, this works great. I was thinking of getting the kind that plugs into the lighter for late fall/early spring fishing when the spray actually freezes on the sheild. The heater is like the rear defrost on your car/truck. I got my helmet at Shadetree in BigLake, MN, but Dennis Kirk (www.DennisKirk.com) also sells a line of them and this time of year you might find them on sale.

I've been wearing a helmet for the past 5 years, they are great.
I use a full face motorcycle helmet with a flip lens, it will
get foggy when you first put it on, open the lens a little bit
and it will clear up. For added warmth I put a full face mask on and tuck the collar area into my parka, otherwise your throat will get chilled. Even in Colin's boat. LOL
Waz,I often wore a helmit when I was teamed up with JW in his Ranger. On cold days and rainy days it was a blessing especially on a long run.The problems were they got hot on a warm day, they fogged up and two more pieces of equipment in an already overloaded boat.Perhaps you could store them in your livewell since you seldom need it!Good luck finding a 10-gallon model!See you on the water soon!We won't even recognize each other.JM
Helments work great for high speed running and gunning in bad or cold weather.
If it is raining hard -- you need to size the helment, so that you can leave the hood of your rain suit on your head, before putting your helment on.
That way, wshen the rain comes, and hits the top of the helment or the face shield, the water will run down to the edge of the helment, then hit the rain suit and run off.
If you leave the hood down, then put on the helment -- as the rain runs off the helment, it hits the inside of the rain suit, and you are quickly drenched from the neck down.
This means that when you go helment shopping -- get a snowmobile helment - they are insulted and contain a double face shield - with an air space inside -- like a thermopane window -- so there is little or no fogging -- even in cold weather.
Another thing to minimize fogging, is to lift (partially at least) the shield when you are running slow. This will allow your breath to escape and will avoid helment fogging.
Because of the design of a well made snowmobile helment --- as your speed builds, fully close the helment. You have both air entrance and egress holes. So, as your speed builds, with a fully closed helment - cool air is drawen in the entrance holes, under your chin -- passed over the shield (preventing fogging) then leaving out the top of the shield.
Go for it - put up with the harassing of your buddies and others - and stay dry and warm.
Take care

I don't think so, but then you never know. The one I am refering to is the Snowmobile, ATV and Motorcycle accessories catalogue company. They are based here in MN and they have a scratch and dent store in Pine City off HWY 35 north of White Bear Lake. Check them out!

I know what your nieghbor Bob would say about you wearing a helmet. He would say they don't make them for Jack O' Lanterns.
HEE HEE
I don't know how helpful this is, but I know they make helmets for ocean sail racing. I've only seen them in pictures of the guys racing on the round-the-world catamarans. However, they looked light weight and had full clear face masks. They might have some other neat features since they are designed to be on the water. Surely they must sell them in one of the big marine catalogs if you are interested. Just a thought and hope it helps.
