We were up there about 2 weeks ago and caught many eyes/saugers. Caught most of them on gold jigs and pink/white jigs, and some on a bare (red) hook and minnow. Fished in 30 feet of water, about 2-6" off the bottom. Tried some small spoons with minnow or minnow head but they didn't produce. Good luck ! ! ! !

I am a Lake Erie boy and I am heading up to the the Lake of the Woods for a long weekend of ice fishing 02/16-02/19. I was hoping to get a little in sight on the types of baits and presentation you guys/gals use up there. On Lake Erie, when there is ice, which there has not been any yet this year, we use med. to big swedish pimples and little cleo's. We usually tip all three hooks with minows and jig them off the bottom. I run charters here on Lake Erie and I know our tech. are quit different than yours during the spring, summer and fall. So, I asume your tech. are probably different for ice fishing in the winter. Any in sight would be greatly appreciated. I am going to being fishing with one of my buddies who is a native of Min. so I am sure I will learn a lot from him when I get there, but it would be nice to have a little additioinal knowledge going into it so that I can try to hold my own when I am fishing with him. Thanks.......

Just got back from Lake of the Woods last night, three of us fished for a day and a half and caught about thirty keeper saugers and walleyes. We put back at least that many small ones, we were fishing in thirty feet of water off of Long Point. Used mainly glo-jigs with pink and white being the best. Recharge them with a tazer often this seemed to make a real difference. I also caught a 20 inch sauger, the biggest I have ever seen, we were checked by the DNR creel survey and he said it was the biggest he had seen all winter.

Take care and good fishing,

Bob M

I have a bait shop in Roseau just 20 mins from lake of the woods. depending on were you go there are a couple different things that you can do. the number one thing is if you have a vexilar bring it. personally i jig a gold angel eye minnow tipped with a full minnow or minnow head depending how torid the bite is. pimples and cleos work good to. dont be affraid to use the med and large size jigging spoons, i have found they catch more and bigger fish than the smaller takle. if you are looking for eater size fish a good bet this time of the year are the mud flats off the reefs. a key is to be all by yourself away from other houses. right now is also a good time for trophy northerns on the reefs, a simple tip up with a sucker or cisco will do the trick. store # is 218-463-9913 (justin) i'll give you the day to day and help put you on some fish.

Thanks for the info. guys, I appreciate it. When you guys are fishing the jigs, what size do you usually like. We usually fish bigger sizes here on Erie 1/2 to 3/4 and sometimes as much as 1 oz. Is that the size you usually use or do fish the smaller sizes? Also do you put twister tails on your jigs as well as minnows or simply minows and minnow heads?

Additionally, I have become addicted to braid line on Erie, usually with a floro carbon leader. When ice fishing the braided sometimes freeze up, but I spray my line with PAM and it usually helps prevent it from freezing. Do you use braided up your way our do you find that the visibility of it spokes the fish.

John,

I usually fish one rod with a 1/8 oz jig and minnow under a slip bobber. Have never tried a twister tail when ice fishing. I use a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head on the other rod. Keep both lines moving as much as possible, it really makes a difference. Also the glo-jigs seemed to outproduce the non glo this year. Just be sure and recharge them often. Any more questions don't be afraid to ask.

Take care and good fishing,

Bob M

Ben-= I've heard of Rat Trap portage and I think Totem Lodges claim to have 2 private lakes and I believe Rat Trap may be one. When I can take some time (couple weeks) I'll be doing some exploring up there. Unforunately it may not be for 8-10 years. I can't wait!!

i am one of the only guides from totem that goes to rattrap lake,,
it is as you said ,, great fishing ,, but hard to figure out ,,
i think the show you saw was with me and ron schara,, we had a great time and caught lots of walleyes ,, however ,, yes we only fish it as catch and release and would like it to stay that way ,, please,,,,
so if you get the chance (we do have a boat cache there but do not use it very much) please also fish it with a catch and release attitude and let the lake live on with no fish taken ,, you will like it better if you go back in several years and fishing is still the same ,,, excellent ,,,,

i have been in that lake several times and caught several hundred walleye each time ,, so i am no stranger on how to fish it properly ,, but it does have a special technique that works,,
(but i will not get into that right now,,, )

hope if you do go there you have a great time and " let em go ,,,, let em grow,,, "
