How about the Lorain lightjouse? Anybody getting perchies there yet?
By the way, I hear Erie Outfitters in Sheffield Lake is cleaning fish this year. Real handy for Lorain and Avon Lake rampers.

Thanks WB. Been chomping at the bit to get over there. Smelt are going nuts at Edgewater. I hear there's a gate at Lorain now and it's not accessible to smelt anglers.

Bud,
Where is Erie Outfitters located. Many times my firstmate does not feel like cleaning fish and I know I hate cleaning fish after a day of chartering, but my customers never want to drive to Lorain to have their fish cleaned. It would be nice if there was a place closer to Rocky River.
Thanks,
John........

John-Erie Outfitters is located 1/2 mile west of the Miller Rd. boat launch in Avon Lake. Go west and it's on the south side in a small strip center. Nice store and close!
I hear they will be cleaning perch and everything else. They fillet and skin 'em, which I think tastes fine! Bud

It's true! The smelt are biting very well at Edgewater Park. We got 504, on wax worms, Saturday night. Most of them being caught behind the water treatment plant. Any smelt activity in Lorain? JC
Bud, Thanks for the info. It will be nice having a place at least a little closer to Rocky.....John

hey Jim I don't have any idea what it takes to catch smelt, but I would be very interested in learning. I have caught some before, but we were always prech fishing in the fall and a few years ago they were widely scattered in with schools of perch and hit the shiners we were using. This sounds like it is primarily a night thing and if that is what it takes that's okay with me. I love to bluegill and perch fish in the marinas near where I live in east and west harbors in catawaba and marblehead areas. Thanks in advance for any help. ollie

Sunday, when it was a dark, cloudy afternoon, they started hitting at 4:00pm at Edgewater. Lots of us use #10 or 12 hooks tipped with a maggot but white or maggot colored flies work well by themselves. I catch just as many on 'em. Erie outfitters in Sheffield Lake sells smelt flies. 949-8934.
They should be hitting another month yet. See ya there.
Ollie,
Yes, we fish for smelt at night starting around 6pm. We use magots or wax worms either on a small jig or a home made crappie rig with #8 hooks.
Haven't been fishing since last week and don't know if the fish are still biting. I will check on it and let you know. If the weather is good this weekend I plan to go.
I also like crappie fishing in the spring in Sandusky as well as walleye fishing around the Marblehead Lighthouse.
I'll keep in touch, Jim

Lorain report;Feb.16 6 perch.Feb 17 7 perch.Marked plenty of fish. They are there. The ones that do bite hit real hard.A couple degree rise in water temperature will get em started.

Wild Bill-
Tried the boat already? How's the Lund treating you? I guess I'll have to BEG to fish with you, huh? Get your own bait?

Thanks for the info Jim, I may get a chance to try for them this weekend, but it will probably be during the day. Things in the western basin are at a standstill and will probably remain that way until the wind lets up. ollie

WB-
Yeah, I bet you have! Been working on the yard? Maybe on your tan?Bet it's cold fishing lately. As soon as anything is reported, LET'S GO! If they start hittin' at Maumee Bay, I'll pull that red monster out and we'll check out the new GPS and radio. If we do get lost, we can listen to the radio as we head South. Maybe we could snag some in the river!?!?!

Went fishing last night and got 147 smelt. They are still biting pretty good. With this cold weather coming in it can only get better.
Keep ya posted! Jim
