Heading to springvalley this weekend to do some sauger fishing. What are the best color jig to use and size? what about 3/way what color floaters? thanks

First choice would be an orange jighead with a 3” single or double chartreuse twister tail. Second choice would also be a orange jig with any color tail. Fuzzy grubs and sassy shad shapes also work.

Oops, forgot about questions # 2 & 3.
Saugers should still be deep in the channel so some weight may be needed. If the winds allow 1/4 oz. would be my first choice. Drop to 3/8 oz. to remain vertical and keep bottom contact.

A couple of 3 way rigs work for me. An 8” dropper line is tied to a 1 ½ oz. river jig, tipped with a fuzzy grub and fathead minnow. The trailer can be any old float (phelps firetiger floater preferred), hooking the fathead from the top of nose and out the bottom. Blues, greens, chartreuse also produce.

On another rod, I might replace the trailer with a small floating rapala or some other shallow diving floating stickbait. I keep the trailer line to 2-3 feet to keep the snags down.

Some days the dropper outperforms everything else. Nest day its something else. Go figgur.

I keep my dropper line 2 pounds of test thinner than the main line so I don’t loose the while rig if snagged. The trailer is also 2# lighter with a floating jig, but equal strength line if trailing minnow imitator.

Leave your livewell hatches opened. Mine froze last year. Kinda tuff getting fish in there. Also check your bilges to make sure they are not frozen.

eye crosser,

A couple of options to get some river jigs.

1) Assorted river jigs & fatheads are sold at the small tackle/bait shop in the boat dealership (Riverside Marine?) just 1/2 mile north of Barto Landing on Rt. 89.

2) Order them from Hot Jigs at: www.hotjigs.com
