hey im no pro---but ive marked more fish this yr on the finder then ever before----were dealing with cleaner water ---ample suppy of bait fish and trust me walleye are gobbling up gobies so are the small mouth---why nt get someone to make a gobie lure-----or something that really immatates a lake erie bait fish----think about it very rare are the days that u can go out and actually drift fish and catch ur limit w weight fwds like u use to---its not lack of fish---its lack of proper presentation-----course thats jst my opinion
And a very good opinion!! Takes more effort than before! CW

I have been thinking the same thought. Is there a lure that mimics the gobie, because if there is that's the lure i want to buy. I have also given some thought to using live gobies to fish with. But it never seemed to fail, everytime I wanted a gobie, I got one of those pesky little 8" perch. (LOL)

2 years ago afriend and i were jiggng over the reefs at toussaint western basin of lake erie for walleye----walleye were nt biting however the gobies were----i put on a perch spreader put gobies on the hooks---hooked so they could still swim around----didnt catch walleyes but sure caught the small mouth bass that day. -------------------mike
I am pretty sure that GOBIES being an exotic of species is unlawful
to have in your possession
i heard you can possess ONE but have to destoy it-or throw it back??

also i didnt put the gobies on my hook they bit my minnow and i jst let the gobie stay on the line awhile swimming around and bam a smallmouth would hit it----we let the small mouth go and put a dent in the gobie population----it is against the rules to use gobies as bait or have live ones in ur possesion---however if a gobie bites ur line and u dont take him off the hook right away and a small mouth comes along and gobbles him up what is a fisherman to do?------mike

if you would have read the post with thought
you probably wouldn't of called me Know It All
i read your post and thought maybe you were not aware of the Laws
with the gobies
I also asked if anyone(including the ODNR) could shed some light on
a subject that seems to be in the grey
ps: i am not pickin a fight so i won't comment about perch spreaders
OK

I cant seem to put my name on the company that makes it, but i have seen a lure that is really similar to that of a goby. Other than that dark colored body baits like Jr. Thundersticks, Reef Runners, Bomber Long A's (blacks, browns, dark greens, ect) seem to always work out productivly for me...But i still cant seem to go wrong with a silver or gold watermellon pattern.

From what I've read, the goby isn't a preferred food of the Walleye in Erie, but they will eat them if nothing better is readily available. As other posters have noted, the smallmouth really seem to like em. Unfortunately, the goby is a serious risk to the smallmouth because they will eat their eggs during the spawn.
The goby isn't really an exotic species, more like an aquatic nuisance. Every single time I catch one, it goes back in the water---dead! I'm not the expert with the final word on this, but I really doubt the ODNR minds if you kill a few using them for bait.

Just looked up the OHIO regulations and they say:
"It's illegal to possess LIVE goby for any purpose"
Hmmm-leaves a few questions Maybe I'll give them a call Monday
FYI
Walleyelove sorry we crossed on the wrong path
Maybe we'll meet up sometime
Dean
I don't know what your questions are but, I do the ODNR's reasoning. That is; they don't people transplanting this potentially damaging species to other bodies of water.

ETT I'm not sure what you mean, but if you have some sort of link or
knowledge Please let us know
Thanks
The brown Reef Runners, Goby colored I got off Den worked well off and on, last fall. If you consider catching one Walleye every 4 hours comparded to everyone else not catching anything, they work. The other thing that worked well on a tough bite, is run a crank bait where ever or how deep you long line and then add another crankbait with an Offshore OR-16, pinned snap-on with 3-4 foot leader to crankbait, hook on line, will not tangle as it dives deeper than the line. Let out another 20 feet so it is down 8 foot. Target the top 10 foot. Great system for Offshore boards or add a bobber with an OR-16 clipped on to the line. Let out another 150 feet. Make sure you are only using 3 hooks in total for the two crankbaits by Ohio law.

Regarding using live goby's for bait: Assuming you don't transport them from the lake, common sense certainly would suggest that there would be nothing wrong with using them. However, in Ohio, it is illegal to possess live goby's for any purpose, no exceptions.
I am certain that if checked, you could be ticketed for using them for bait regardless of the circumstances. That includes catching one and immediately rehooking it for bait. Stating it's illegal to possess a live one for any purpose, certainly simplifies enforcement - no grey areas. I can only imagine the concern might be someone will forget and leave a few in their livewell/baitbucket (or claim they forgot).
I seriously doubt that the ODNR is making a major enforcement effort to catch people using gobies for bait, but if your observed...might depend on the officer or their mood that day, but they have been hired to enforce the law, not interprete it...
I've heard perch will go for dead ones.
