I have a friend who is a charter caption, but I can't get a hold of him. I was wondering who I would have to contact or call about getting my captoin license and what are the proceses? I live on the western basin and was wondering if I would have to contact the Toledo Coastguard station or someplace in Downtown Toledo.
Thanks in advance

Drake,
You want to contact The U. S. Coat Guard at the following address:
Regional Examination Center
Room 501, Federal Building
234 Summit St.
Toledo, OH 43604
419-259-6395
I would also suggest that you take a captains course. These courses prepare you for the exam. (It is tougher than you may think) Good Luck.

Drake,
There is a course that will be offered in Marblehead starting on March 23 that is ran by Sea Tech Marine. The course is 495.00 and that includes the test and all of your study work. I just passed the course they had in Feb. and am just waiting for the paper work to be done by the Coast Guard to start chartering. This class was great and prepared me very well for the test which I passed the first time. There were also 3 other WC regulars that passed .The course is a 4 weekend class with the test taken on the forth Sunday. You can contact Dennis Danials at 716 694 7402 for futher info.
Good Luck

WalleyeWiz11,
You should have gone on buddy! We passed the Masters +Towing today.
Drake this is a great prep class, with a pass rate in the 90+% range. The tests are the same as the as the ones given by the Coast Guard and they are a challenge, but this course will provide with the knowledge and training needed to pass. The success rate of people doing independent studies is low and very time consuming.
Dwayne it was great meeting you in the prep class! Hope to fish with you this year! E-mail sometime at: tpatter@columbus.rr.com

Tracy, good job on passing the Masters. I was thinking about taking it but I was in Chicago until yesterday. I will probley take it during the next class in March.I will for sure give you a buzz when I start fishing. Had a great time BSing with you and Mel. I will be giving him a call this week to go look at the boat.

Thanks Walleyewiz, I will take that course this coming March.
495.00 sounds pretty cheap to me, I thought it was going to be more.
Thanks
Drake
kinda catchy

Drake, I agree with the previous responses regarding the prep. courses. I would add that you need to inquire about the total cost when you talk to the course provider. You will find that the total cost will be somewhat higher when you add in things like a physical, coast gaurd fees, higher insurance ect. If you check out all the angles of this properly, you won't be in for any surprizes. Good luck Kelly.

There is a extra cost to get your license from the CG .The fee is 145.00 for them to issue it. The 495.00 covers the course and the test only.

You hit more than one wrong key! Hows your math? If you can't add and your a good captain, I may want to hire you to take me fishing! If we catch a bunch of fish and your bill comes to $5.00 I won't give a s*** about your spelling!

Hey Drake, don't let him get to you. I couldn't spell charter captain either, and now I are 1 :-) You know what I found out? The fish don't care!!!!
Seriously, keep in mind that there are costs beyond the school so you are not surprised. Cost of test, physical exam, drug test, CPR and First Aid classes, and drinks for celebrating when you pass the test!! Good luck
