Fishing was decent the weekend of March 2-3 for those willing to brave the wind, rain, snow, slush and cold. We fished the Hog Alley stretch with 1/4 oz chartreuse, white 3" grub tail, and rattles. Limits were common if you wanted to work a bit. Our best day was Sunday, took 11 fish total with the top fish just under 25 lbs.

So that was the secret to catchin the pigs we turned in our limit but only had 14.22 lbs couldent catch the pigs all our fish were on 3/8 fire balls with a minnow.Guess we should of down sized and added the tail!Tom you fishing the Detroit tourney?See ya there maybe we can get soome pigs there!!!!

Our catch picked up when we went a bit more subtle. Lowering that jig just off bottom and basically just shaking it to get the rattles going. Surprisingly, some of the hits were rather strong.

Yes - we're fishing the Detroit River event. Probably all five WWA events, in addition to MWT.

My son wants to fish a tourney with me this year. Think we might do the Houghton lake event as it fits in my otherwise busy schedule.
Great job this weekend guys. Kept thinking to myself, WOW what a day for a tourney! LOL

Wow, I'm sorry that I missed the tourney. I was gonna fish it too. I saw all that snow coming and didn't want to chance coming from Detroit Area getting there and not being able to fish. How was the ramp? How many teams fished?

I made the trek from SE Michigan Saturday morning. Needless to say, it was a white-knuckled trip all the way up. The ramps were in tremendous shape - plowed, salted - not a problem whatsoever. Getting to and from the ramp was a different story. I think only 15 teams participated in total.

Tom-What kind of boat do you fish out of?

My wife and I were fishing that area. We picked up
some fish, good bite but no hogs. That wind was blowing my Tracker around pretty good.

We called it quits at 2:30.

We were in the Yarcraft 1895 Storm. Spent the entire day in that 300-400 stretch of the river. We weighed roughly an 8, 5, and three 4's. You're right, the wind was absolutely brutal.

Tom I was running the black and teal skeeter . I wanted to say good job. The number of fish you and your partner took compared to the others in the pack was impressive. If you don't mind I would like to talk to you at the next event.I have been interested in Yar-Craft for a while. I would like to get your opinion.

Check the "Tournaments" link on the WC home page. The next four events are scheduled for the Detroit River, Houghton, Erie and Saginaw Bay. Should be a blast.

As luck would have it - 4th overall, 1/2 lb out of the money. Just one hog away.....

Not a problem - look me up. Coincidentally, my rig is for sale on the WC classifieds. However, at this late stage, I'd probably want to hang onto it until the end of the season. I'd be happy to get you out for a ride - Detroit pre-fishing maybe?

Okay, I remember seeing you. I was in the 16 ft. Green and Silver
Tracker that kept getting blown across the river... The wife got froze out, She is still shaking. My buddy that was supposed to fish the tourney couldn't go. She is still cursing him. HA :) I doubt she will be available for the Detroit Tourney. LOL

She seems to think that trolling the Bay when the weather is 75 and sunny is more to her liking than the Spring River stuff.

I was speaking of the Rust St. ramps. Actually, this event was my first time on the river, I'm not aware of any others in the area. I suspect that the ramps were in good shape just because of the tournament - maybe not. If not, kudos to the city/township/whoever that looks out for these things.

Mike and Steve did a fine jod of shoveling and salting the ramp so we could get in i wish the city would do that.It can get kind of scarey watching some of the guys launching there boats.Tires burning and trucks sideways!some of them dont realize they will stop slideing when they hit the water. So my suggestion is get your boat in and get out of the way you never know whos going to drop there boat off the trailer!!!;-)

Tom,
In your expert opinion, do you think the river will be fishable by Friday?........assuming the weather is stable. I haven't been up there is a few weeks, so I have no idea how bad it is.

Tom22
03-11-2002, 06:26 PM
There is no way possible, its over its banks now, and all the tribs that dump into it are still over the banks, .It may even rise more by tues, before it starts to recede...Have to fish the Detroit....Tom

Detroit may not be over the banks, but I suspect you'll find the same water clarity. I'm writing this weekend off.
