View Full Version : Sandusky Bay Eyes
This will be my first spring eye fishing, and I will be docked in Sandusky Bay. I've been "hearing" alot about catching eyes in the
bay, around Cedar Point and their migration to Marblehead - Kelleys.
Can anyone shed any light on - are these fish that make a wrong turn leaving the Sandusky River in Fremont after spawn, do they enter the Bay itself to spawn, overall migration pattern, is there a substantial number, et all ??
thanx in advance
The fish out around Kellys are coming from the reefs off Davis Besse. The Sandusky River fish turn right and boogy once they leave the bay.
Work the area from the bridge to the coal docks, and then on over to Cedar point, with Little Rippers, or Deep Little Rippers short. Have a ball. Expect the hot spot to change every day.

How early in the spring would you be looking for an active bite in that area?
Baily,
All the fish that spawn in the Sandusky River run through the bay. The bite I was referring to is actually a post spawn thing, but I know some local work the cuts in the railroad bridge with success. So I guess as soon as you want. I'd be shocked if I couldn't catch one in there right now. (either place)

It's my understanding that the numbers of fish that spawn in the river are low because of habitat problems, however a bunch of fish reportedly spawn in the bay.
How early? I have a friend who once jigged at the iron bridge in late Mar/early April and caught numbers of males.
For the area outside the bay the bite starts at ice-out. Actually Seeing "draggers" who pull small boats across shore ice to open water is not uncommon anywhere from Marblehead to Catawba. 90+% vert jig swedish pimples, etc tipped with shiners on all hooks. If you don't mark friendly fish, move til you find them. I feel clear water (or just inside the edges of mudlines) is key to deep water vert jigging.
Drifting bouncers w/#4 silver blades/chart float/beads & a big shiner works. Slow trolling stickbaits is becoming more common.
Good Luck, jc

how deep is the water you are working? do you need a big boat i have 18 foot lund is that enough??? we have used it to duck hunt the bay several times with out any problems just kept an eye on the weather thanks again...
The bay is about 12' from the bridge to the coal docks, up to as little as 6' over by Ceadr Point. The shippng channel is around 30'. An 18' is big enough for any Lake Erie water if you watch the weather.

I'm not advocating it but I've fished erie for 13 yrs out of 16' footers (fits in garage). You'll see a few 14's out there at ice out. If rough, it can be very slow and wet. With an 18' lund, I'd think I was in heaven.
Make sure you have a compass (gps can fail))regardless of the distance your heading out (in case of fog). Watercraft safety checks are common at the ramps.
