I know this was discussed previously, but I couldn't find it in the
archives. If I recall correctly, people said that for leaders one should use special fluorocarbon leader material rather than fluorocarbon. If so, why, and where is it available?

I don't recall that post. I used Vanish successfully last season as leader material. I simply attached 6 ft sections to 10lb Big Game line using blood knots.

The fluorocarbon line that is available over the counter generally is substandard to the fluorocarbon leader material. I use Seaguar fluorocarbon leader material by Cabelas. Yes, its expensive but worth the money. Abrasion resistant, tough, and virtually invisible. I tried another fluorocarbon last year and had alot of problems with it. The thing with fluorocarbon is to wet it thoroughly before snugging and tying knots.

It is not that the leader material is special. It is 100% pure flourocarbon, and sold in 25 yard spools. The stuff is way too stiff and kinky to even think about spooling it on reels. The blends simply won't work in rough service situatios.

Seaguar, P Line, are the 2 brands that I'm familiar with. Can be bought from Cabelas or Bass Pro, in their salt water catalogs. Hope this helps.

Which knot do you suggest? I'm looking to put a small barrel swivel between my Power Pro line and the jigging spoon with a fluorcarbon leader. Thanks.

A well lubed Polomar knot works very nicely. Make sure the knot lays down nicely to avoid weakness. Seaguar is by far the best Fluorocarbon that I have tried. Vanish is not even close.

Question on the topic:

Is this leader material used for connection to a jig and crankbait (in addition to the standard use for harness rigs) with fire line?

If so, how long a leader using connection to fire line for both the jig and the crankbait?

Perferred knot between fire line and the leader?

Thanks Rick
