The SOWC held their first event of the 2002 season on Piedmont Lake on Saturday, April 13. The lake level is still about a foot below Summer pool and, with the Saugeyes moving up the feeder creek in very shallow water, access to the big females was restricted by the silt delta at the mouth of the creek. A few good fish were taken on shallow cranks in 1 to 3 feet of water but most anglers tried to fill limits of bucks in the deeper water near the dam. My partner and I weeded through the "hammer handles" on the old roadbed and managed a third Place finish. Our fish, and the fish caught by the first Place team, came in 20 to 22 feet of water on 1/4 ounce Green and Gold Vib-"E" bladebaits. The second Place team weighed in a 4 pound Saugeye for "Big Fish" of the event. That fish came on a Clown #5 Shad Rap in 2 feet of water. The second Place team also caught fish on 1/4 ounce Vib-"E"s. Bladebaits accounted for most of the Saugeyes caught by those teams finishing in the top 10. If the water levels were higher boats could, with caution, navigate up into the feeder creek, over the silt bars, and target the bigger fish. Weekend anglers fishing from the upstream bridge spanning this creek have been taking limits of nice fish on jig/plastic combos and live Chubs or Suckers. I tried to gain access to the creek on Friday's prefishing trip in a flat bottomed boat with a push pole but we just couldn't pass the silt bars and get into the deeper, 5 to 6 foot creek channel. By next week the Saugeyes should begin to move back into the main lake and the areas around the Reynolds Road ramp, Indian Run, and Six Mile Run should start providing anglers with plenty of action and good eating.
The new SOWC page should be up soon and the detailed info will be posted there.
Good report Jim! Did you get wet?:7 I was fishing over the hill at Seneca Sat for bass. Around 40 bass boats there. Two club tourneys going there. Placed 1st in our club. :-) Nothing to be proud of though with only two fish. But two more than all my group. Then me an my partner Earl fished the tourney out of Pohattan Point Sun. 40 boats in this one also. Didnt make the money. We were back between 10-15 place. Lot of good smallies caught yesterday. I believe a 3pound 4ounce smallie took big fish. There were around 6-8, 6fish limits between 9 and 13 pounds. Sure woulda like to found there honeyholes.:-) I'd say most of the fish were caught below the dams. Pike Island, Hannibal, and Willow Island. Those 1/4 ounce silver VibE's should be lethal on those smallies in these areas eh Jim? Good Luck to ALL! 2002 SEASON IS STARTING TO BOOM! :7
