If you do any amount of trolling at all, put a little more money in and get Daiwas. I had some vanguards, the drag was terrible and I tore up the anti-reverse. Have since switched to Daiwas and I think everyone else will agree that they are right up there. I learned the expensive way.

Line counters are an extremely valuable tool for trolling. The vangard reels that I have seen at Fleet Farm are only $55 new, and look like garbage. I don't know if we are talking about the same model. IF you take your $75 to Fleet Farm or Gander (or...), you can get yourself some really nice new Okuma reels and have a couple $$$ left in your pocket. If you don't mind spending a bit more ($85-90), you can buy Diawa 27LC reels. The group here regularly recommends the Diawa as the best, but the Okumas have a good following too. Good Luck!

I have the D20W from Cabela's that I think were around $75 and I have really liked them. These I think are made by Pinnacle. My father just ordered a digital one from Cabelas for like $90 that looks nice too. My D20W's have been in use for 4 hard years and have had absolutely no problems with them, nice big wheel for drag, loud clicker for strikes and wide so the spool is a good reflection of distance (not much like stretch on the spool).

The Vanguards look a lot like Cabela's reels. Cabela's has them for $80.00/ea. Buy 3 get 1 free = $60.00 each. Bass Pro Shops has the Daiwa 47lc for $69.99. I have used the Cabela's and know a charter captain who has used them on king salmon and they seem to have held up pretty well. Some of us will be trying out Shakespeare's line counter reels, this year. $39.99 on-line at Cabela's....If you can afford them, you can't go wrong with any of the Daiwas. Duane

I was helping set up at the bismarck boat show on thur. and seen in the dakota tackle booth that they were selling okumo line counters for I believe $46. That is a great buy. Also had daiwa 27's for I think $84.
