Where are you coming from?
The bite on Whitefish can be feast or famine on the opener. Most folks document the latter.

I actually live just off the chain and have fished this body of water for 25 years.

Some of the best opportunities to sport a limit would be just below the Crosslake Corps of Engineers Dam. You have to get there early (midnight) to get a spot, especially if it is like previous years.
If you are going to take a more relaxed approach I would suggest using a lake run silver shiner for live bait. Rig a 5' to 7' leader and drift or troll in 7 to 10 feet of water. You can also troll the shallows with a #7 Rapala or minnow imitator. Keep plenty of line behind the boat as you move accross the shallows. This technique generally produces in the evening.

Give me some more details and I might be able to offer some further help...

Crank are the walleyes coming in below the dam now? I heard you can see them when they come in. I might run over with the kids and have a look.

They completed the reconstruction of the Dam late this fall.

I know that the fish have started moving up the Pine River with a good run on Sat. night of around 500 fish in the nets.

With the work on the Dam complete I'm not sure how the viewing will be this year. However, I would bet that the numbers will really start improving this week and with the mild weather were having you may catch a glimpse of some fish this weekend.

One more thing I should have stated with a little more clarity.

The "real" viewing of the Walleyes can be seen at the DNR stripping station at the mouth of the Pine River. You can see the one's you only dream about here. If you intend to go, ask the DNR officer when they are going to strip and you can actually watch the process and see these huge eye's close up. It's great for the kids...
The station is located just off of highway 15, take a left at the Driftwood Resort road located about 3.5 miles from #1 going So. or from 371 take a right in Jenkins and go approx. the same distance and look for the sign and road on your right. Take the first asphalt road to the left (approx. 1 mile)drive down until you see some yellow buildings, they should be right in front of you as they are on a corner to the right...

Good Luck
