I purchased 2 small planers a few years ago but have never used them because I realized that I had the wrong type of rod holders already mounted on my boat (the type that direct your rod parallel with the water). I am considering doing more trolling this year and was looking for some advice on the proper rod holders, rods, reels, and the technique in using them with planers. I have enjoyed using light weight tackle for walleye and would like to continue fishing without the use of large bulked up gear like what is used with dipseys and jets.

Well,... if you want to run planer boards you have to have rods capable of doing that work. 7' rods rated for up to 18# test line would be the minimum. No way around it. You'd simply wear out lighter rods, and cause yourself problems.

try using eagle claw 7 ft light trolling rods we have used them for years they have alot of action and we use the new okuma line counters they have held up to all the fishing you can give them along with 14 lb test florocarbon leaders.they will do a good job for you it is much more fun to fish with lighter rods and not the heavy equipment.
